Hi all,
I landed in canada last sept with family and came back after a month. I did my SIN, health & G liscence etc...After seeing Toronto, Missisauga & Niagra first hand from Dubai it was not very facinating as one would expect if we were comming from India.
I am a civil Engineer 40 yrs with 2 kids boy 9 and girl 5, and am confussed in making the decison to go to canada for good. Will I find jobs? if not what will happen after I exaust my resources and the like. Please advise. I am not sure if I really have comitted a SIN.

Regards,
Paul

Canada is a very large country and has relatively good network of highways for it's size. I have never been to Dubai but Dubai is much smaller and if I am not wrong, highways are filled with those confusing roundabouts like in India (which are cheaper to have than the overpasses) unlike Canadian Highways which have overpasses or underpasses every where.

What you saw is just a small portion of Canada. Canada has 508 airports with paved runways (compared to 13 airports in UAE). Canada is a country rich in natural resources and minerals.

Just to give you a comparision - The province of Aberta has GDP and oil reserves bigger than that of the whole of UAE. Job prospects may be much slimmer for you than that of UAE however because you need to get licensed in North America to practise your profession.

Most of the infrastructure in Dubai is pretty new compared to Canada. Same goes for the Buildings(exteriors and interiors), malls etc. I know quite a few people who were taken aback because they expected Canada to 'look' even better than the manmade structures they saw in Dubai. These people were expecting better buildings, highways, hotels etc. I personally look for other things in a country and for the most part, would rather live in Canada than Dubai anyday. However my mindset may be totally different from yours.

About your second para...if you have to ask, you probably have made a mistake. If you can do enough research and focus on your goals...you may come out the winner.

Thanks for the quick reply. More than the place, I am concerned about taking the decision to migrate to canada. Will I find good jobs? We all have dreams, but what if such things don't happen? Am I going to end up as a laborer in Canada. How will my family accept this etc. Will I be able to handle it mentally & physically? Pls give me your thoughts all of you out there

You are asking such specific questions about what your experiences may be like...no one can see into the future and tell you that. You will have to come here and find out first hand what it will be like. It may be difficult or relatively easy for you....the experience is a personal one and is different from one person to the next. Someone who answers your above questions would be making a huge generalisation.

Pink Panther,
If he comes here and tries to see first hand , if he can get a good job would n't that drain his resources? is this the only solution?
I think a best way is to find is do proper research from Dubai to see if he will get a good job in Canada. Let him use the internet, mail to his civil engg. association in Canada or call them to find if this field has good jobs for immigrants. If he finds positive response from Canada, then let him come here . Also there would be a lot of civil engineers who had previously immigrated to Canada and then returned back to Dubai. He can enquire with them too.
I guess that is what "The A-Ha" people of canada would suggest.

You are the person who has the answer to these questions. Since you are asking...my short answer due to the attitude that comes across in your questions....its better for you to stay there.

Here are **some** of the things you can do to improve your chances:
Join canadian forums regarding your occupation, be professional and ask good questions of the forum members. Try to build a network online with people who are already in your profession(NOT JUST DESIS), without pestering them. Look at the classifieds of canadian newspapers online. Research companies that you would like to work for and find out what they look for in their employees. Contact them via e-mail and maybe build a rapport with their HR dept.
In other words BE PROACTIVE.

If you think its too much of trouble you probably are taking a gamble. Could go either way.
