Its very strange that these kind of 'unheard' of diseases (literiosis, salmonela etc..) strike in more developed and technologically advanced countries. Meat and veggies are probably least hygienically processed in India (compared to US/Canada atleast), but never heard these diseases there.

Maybe the effect of too much sterilisation/cleansing procedures that immunity is very low???

I was thinking same and someone answered that is because in India we do not have much batch breeding and batch production ....?? So if one place has this bacteria, few people are affected ....and as may be undiscovered, does not appear in media and public does not know about it. Makes sense ?

Similarly "thalassemia" I had never heard of that disesase but here they check all pregnant women for that but never heard of that test in india....

We did that test for my wife in the year 1999 in India during her first pregnancy. But may not be very common - maybe our gyanec was proactive...

Processed food consumption like meat products is next to none in India.

The E.coli in spinach probably does not survive cooking in boiling water in India.

India does have outbreaks of water borne diseases like gastroenteritis. Some cities like Delhi ban vendors selling sugarcane juice every summer.

That's right. The notion of processed meat is almost absent in India. As for Salmonela, the vegetables aren't consumed raw all that much - at least not spinach, baby spinach etc.

There are various diseases that a North American would believe is eradicated but still hears about people dying from it in India - like Malaria for example.

Each region, because of the conditions, culture, diet etc etc has its own demons.

I had never heard of Botulism until a couple of people here dropped dead after driking President's Choice carrot juice. I couldn't fathom how anyone could die from carrot juice...but if you read about what causes Botulism you will know. Again, back home canned goods are scarce. Probably why I had never heard of it...
