ITIL v3 (Foundation) can be passed by self-study. You may like to look-around for tutorials/study material. I bought it from ebay.
My approach was:
1. Study exam format... such as how many questions, multiple choice etc, passing score, complexity of questions etc.
2. Study material 3 times.
3. Appear in exam.
4. Throw a party
All this was done in a leisurely period of 3 weeks. Serious people can get it within a week. If you are new to ITIL, then you may like to spend more time on the definitions. If you are already in IT environment, then it is a matter of memorizing the industry terminology.
My friends had attended 2 days intensive course with test at the end. All of them passed and got certificates. But when manager asked about what they had learnt, they were totally blank. I look at this as buying certificate by paying thousands (hence doesn't gain much respect), whereas one could just get it by self learning at almost a fraction of cost. Imagine spending $1600 vs $200.
Feel free to ask for any additional information. In fact, I am already working on to start online coaching for different certificates such as ITIL, PMP, Six Sigma, Kaizen, Total Quality Management etc. I have all these and more by self study only.
Hope this helps.

I am planning (just in thoughts) to take up ITIL foundation too, but just don't have enough resources to self-study. Can you share your experience (may be via PM), if you don't mind please?
Thanks much!

hi,
I did self-study and passed it. It is easy, if you understand how IT industry environment is like.
I consider training providers a big rip-off.
With Regards.
Hi Thinking One,
What is the best book to study for this exam?

I did V3 foundation at global knowledge. At the end of the training there is a test which if you pass you get the certification.
I had a desi trainer who prepared us well for the test (desi style). Pass rate in a class is between 50-75%. If you fail you have to pay and appear for the test.
the test is not easy but its not hard either.
Thanks very much thinkingone for all the details.
One more q -
are you planning to start your online coaching for ITIL anytime soon?
