I am assuming you are talking about going back to India.
In India the appliances run on 220 volt and 50 hertz, while in Canada we have 110 volt and 60 hertz.
The laptops and other items such as cell phone etc. work on dual voltage and you only need an adapter so that the pins can fit in electrical sockets in India. These adapter can be bought from Walmart for around $10 or if you are going to a major city in India, such as Delhi, then you will get it there from any electrical shop for less than INR 25. On my last trip to Indian in 2008, I took my laptop and got the adapter there for only INR 15. The reason is now a days most of the cell phone companies in India have the same type of chargers as in Canada and they provide this adapter with Cell phone chargers. Moreover, all the electrical shops carry these adapters. However, if you are not going to a major city in India, then you may want to buy the same from Walmart.
However, if the appliance is not for dual use, then you would need to buy a converter as well which will convert 220 volt and 50 hertz in to 110 volts and 60 hertz and that would be a little difficult to find there, though still available in major cities but you would better buy it from here. You can get it from Walmart or Future shop etc. but would have to pay up ward of $25 here. Also, make sure that the converter supports the wattage of the appliance such as Hair Dryer, Steam Iron and or Hair Straightener etc.

What to do for Internet connection and Cell phone use any prepaid services ?
There are two type of convertors available, 50W and 1500W. 1500 W is basically meant for short term use like 15 minutes and meant for electrical appliances like iron, cofee makers, etc. 50W can be used for longer duration and can be used for electronic items.
I am not aware of any travel voltage convertor than can convert 50 Hz to 60 Hz. Some items like electonic clocks which are designed for Canada (110V, 60Hz) do not work very well even with adapter because of frequency difference.
Laptops and cell phone chargers usually support dual voltage and you need only pins for the appropriate socket.

The Internet is growing by leaps and bounds in India and there are many options offered by Tata Indicom, Reliance, BSNL, VSNL, Airtel etc. and things keep on changing, so you can find it out a better option there if self. Moreover, if you need internet access only to surf and visit Canadian Desi while in India, then the cheapest option would be to visit Internet Cafe where you can get high speed Internet usage for as low as INR 25 or less for 1 hour.
I would say that enjoy your trip to India and for occasion surfing the Internet cafe would be the cheapest and best option.
