What's the way to transfer data between two laptops other than burning DVD or using flash drives? Is there any date cable I can use between them?

How big are the files?
If they both are on Internet - Easiest that I can suggest you is use of (MSN/Yahoo) Messenger or similar programs.
There are many other means to do it ... but it requires some sort of comfort level.

These days they have the home networking firewalls with in-built NAT and whatnot - much fancier and much more expensive.
Go to any electronics store including Wal*Mart and see if you can find those.
These days, they shouldn't cost more than $10 or $15 since you can get the fancy home networking firewalls for $50.

Put both the laptops on the network and share the drive, or just share the folder containing the files you need to transfer.
1. Right click on the folder (or drive) you need to share.
2. Access it from the other laptop by going to my network places and transfer the files.

One more way I know is the 'TeamViewer', a desktop assistance software, has a feature of transferring files but speed will be same as Yahoo/MSN. Since I will have data around 80-90 GB, I think networking & sharing is the best, as both Laptops are on the same network.

You can use an Ethernet crossover cable this can be used to connect computing devices together without using network switch, hub or router.
