Is there a place in Dubai or Bombay where I can change the plug of the lamps to fit Canadian plug ? is that all I have to do to use a 220 V lamp inCanada or is an adaptor essential?

Do not try without adapter/transformer. Even with adapter some items will not work correctly as the frequencies are different 60 Hz for 110 V and 50 Hz for 220 V.

Not worth the risk. You could blow out all the fuses or it could lead to a bigger mishap like an electrical fire.
thanks everyone for the replies..but dont u just need to use a 110 V bulb ???
The two shiny leaded beads carry the current. Each one helps complete the circuit. The external shell is just a guide. This is the Bayonet Socket.

This is a screw Socket bulb. The exterior screw base helps complete the circuit. The power is conducted through the center contact.

A 220 Volt system is derived from a Three phase (or poly phase Alternators) current Carrying system. It also permits a single phase operation. Small appliances and lighting circuits only need single phase for its use. This will support a table lamp or a house hold lighting circuit also.
If it is THREE Phase, there will be THREE - HOT Wires. Could have a NEUTRAL ALSO.

In 110 Volt there is a line and neutral, same as above. Only ONE HOT Wire and the other the NEUTRAL. If in the plug there is a THIRD Prong, it is a GROUND.

Where am I going with this?
Only to inform you, that the Lighting Bulbs are constructed differently. You now know the difference. The construction is based on the way the current gets conducted into each of the lighting circuit. And they are different in the North American Continent. The bulbs are also different. See the 'links' provided and read to understand the principle.
Freddie.

Yep; It should work.
I have many table lamps and chandlers bought from Asia. Just got the right size (110 V) bulbs and they are working fine. Sometime you can get them only from 'lighting shops'. Frequency (50 or 60) does not bother when it is a bulb and it will give normal light.
However, if the table lamp has that small solid state regulator; that might not give desired results as it’s circuit was designed to work normal on 220 V/ 50 cycles per second.
