is this something like amway/mlm type?

Yeah it is an MLM very similar to Primerica.
The modus operandi is essentially the same.
The company has changed its name a couple of times and was bought out by the Dutch-based Aegon group.
There are several class action lawsuits and govt-initiated actions pending against the company in the US.
They are relatively new in Canada and so the controversies haven't yet caught up with them here yet.
