At this time when jobs are hard to come by and recession, people should be extra careful.
I am surprised that someone can sit and watch TV serials at work on computer and that too in a big company where they will surely have something to track.

About 80 workers at the Bruce Power nuclear plant were dismissed this week for "inappropriate" use of their computers – a warning to employees everywhere that if you use company computers for personal business or entertainment, the boss may be watching.
Spokesman Ross Lamont said the workers, following an internal investigation, were determined to have violated the company's code of conduct as it pertains to email and Internet use.
"It wasn't like this would catch any of the individuals by surprise," said Lamont.
"None of the information that we're dealing with here is business-related. There are no trade secrets, and absolutely no impact on operations, on security, on safety. It was just inappropriate behaviour."
The plant, on the shores of Lake Huron near Kincardine, southwest of Owen Sound, has about 3,800 employees, plus some 2,000 working on contract – among them construction workers, electricians, pipefitters and other trades. All of those dismissed were contract workers.

While I agree with you RajCanada, there might be more that what we are reading. It might be a laying off jobs in this tough recession times and internet usage might have been an excuse to prevent them from paying them severence.
Every one signs an internet usage policy when they join a company but then in most offices you see everyone using the internet and junior staff who get reprimaned for using the internet.
To give you an example, I have seen many senior people in my office using internet very much watching even porn in it. However, when they see a VM using it they get pissed off and talk about rules and how they need productivity etc.... Again , I have seen a Non VM in our office using Facebook all the time, and our boss even one time complimented her for all the pictures of her friends that were in it etc...
That is why in Canada (all other nations have it too but Canada is one which talks of equality, non racisim, compassion, treating VM's, Refugees with respect etc...), there is much more than what meets the eye.
again we have too see under what circumstances these 80 people were fired. How many were VM's ? How many were junior staff and were their super's also net users etc....

Well, it is the employees' stupidity to provide the employer with that excuse. In good times, things may be overlooked, but when companies are itching to cut labor (better yet when not having to pay severence), every policy gets rigidly scrutinized.
I recall in 2003 when one of the mfg plants I was working was scheduled to close its operations, many were fired, as opposed to being laid off with severance, due to policy violations. Among them, one was for harrassment, one for smoking inside the premises, one for theft of tool box (company property), one for helping the guy push the tool box to the car (ultimate stupidity), one for downloading from internet, and so on.

Now that sounds like over exhaggeration. Were they watching it in full view? Perhaps on overhead display monitors.
