Water heater could be broken down. Most likely.

We had a similar problem. We are with Enbridge (gas) and when we looked at our bill, we saw that we were paying a monthly rental fee. So we called Enbridge and they sent a technician the next day who fixed the heater free of charge. Basically we don't own our heater.

If you own you water heater, you can google for service around where you live and I am sure there will be many...

A friend of mine had a similar problem and called me to have a look at his water heater. I found out that the temperature gauge of the water heater had been turned to cold/off. On questioning, it was found that the friend's kids had fiddled with the controls while playing in the basement. It could have been dangerous as any control on the water heater should never ever be touched by a kid or an adult who has no idea of how to operate it.

Before calling Enbridge check your temperature gauge, especially if you have kids;)

Also, you can check if the pilot lamp has shut down (rarely happens). In order to find the pilot, you will have to look at the bottom of the heater after possibly removing a metal door or something to similar to that.

The pilot, if you are not familiar, is always on and looks like flame from a diya or candle. The pilot helps to light up the heater flame ring when water temp is below the thermostat setting.

Bear in mind, the natural gas may still be "leaking" off the pilot even when the pilot is off. The gas is not in dangerous quantities, however, to be extremely worried about. You can light the pilot back on using a candle or a cigarrette lighter. Since there might be leaked gas in the vicinity, you will hear a slight pop when the pilot lights (that may startle you).

If pilot is the cause, before you attempt to light the pilot, read the instructions that usually is posted right on the heater. For example, you will have to turn the thermostat all the way down, so that when you light the pilot, the entire flame ring doesn't light up (this will startle you more and may cause burns).

Thanks All, yes we checked our bill and same thing, it is rental so technician will come today. We also made temp warmer to see if that helps but no, then we observed the flame was gone...so anyway lets see what the tech does. Thanks.

All newer models don't have a pilot lamp. How is old is your water tank. It should have a sticker (by Enbrdige) on there which has the date it was installed.

On a side note, if it is very old, (more than 10 yrs or so), you could ask Enbridge to replace it (at no cost).

In the long run it might be better to buy out the tank and get a 3rd party maintenance plan. It works out cheaper. But that's another discussion.

Thankyou, the tech came and fixed...some censor was oxidized, replaced in less than 2 minutes, was covered, if had to pay, would have cost around $ 300....
