A new tax on gas, hydro and everyday purchases like coffee and newspapers will make life even less affordable for middle-class and working Ontarians.
Ontarians don't need another unfair tax. We need to get Ontario's economy back on track with smart policies like "Buy Ontario" and targeted investments that create and sustain jobs.
its looks like one more unfair action against Ontarians...!
please share your views ......
Ontario is streamlining its tax system to make it harmonious.
Even with the HST many are tax exempt.
It is like streamlining the Indian Sales Tax and Excise duty to a single VAT system.
It'll hard the first two years and then we will forget it.
On a personal front my Condominium Maintenance cost will go up by 13% but still on the long run we have decided to cut the cost of the maintenace to match the amount prior to the HST.
Ontario has a projected deficit of 25 Billion in the next two years. With manufacturing virtually shut down and becoming a services province we need all the cash to keep various services alive like full day children care, swimming pools, fire services, police and other essential services.
On the hindsight please note that there plenty of single mothers who have atleast two children to support and who will need all the support the province gives. Also the first person who will affected will be you as they will start laying off the teachers at your kid school and it will directly relate to your kids learning ability.
If we ask why should I support them ?, then we should be South of the border (Hmmmm... on a lighter note even Rush Limbaugh is calling the Obamanation(new name for USofA) as a socialist country)as we are socialist country.
Let us study the expense profile of a typical desi in Mississauga:
1.Groceries: He pays cash to the desi/chinese shop keeper and avoids taxes.
2.Entertainment: Watches movies which is bought at flea market where he pays cash and avoids taxes. He reads newspaper on the net, watches movies on the net and brings pirated software from India to use it here. Hence no taxes exchanged.
3.Automobile: Buys a car from the seller and negotiates price inclusive of tax, underquotes the price to the DMV and hence pays minimum tax.
4.GAS: Already pays federal and provincial taxes.
5.Clothing: typically buys them in India on visit or US on visit and tries to claim his US taxes at the border. For local clothing either buys it Walmart where the prices are already down to earth and hence pays the minimum taxes. If you are shopping at the Bay or some of the designer joints at SQ ONE like Tommy Hilifiger where a Jean cost 250 bucks you should pay the HST as you can afford to pay that insane amount for a pair of jeans.
6.Education: Your children education/transportation, library, playground is FREE.
7.Coffee: You can buy Taj Mahal tea bags at your desi grocer or instant coffee or even Indian drip coffee and make your own drink. This would cost you hardly 20 to 30 C per drink. If you afford to pay 1.87 bucks for a small at Timmys are 4 bucks at Starbucks YOU should pay a HST raise.
8.Furniture: If you buy your stuff for no money down/do not pay for 48 months from Leon or Ashley you should pay that HST as you could negotiate a 50% price cut inclusive of taxes + delivery from a desi furniture store.
9.First HOME: Any home purchased below 300K(don't hold me on that figure)upto a certain amount of 2K on HST is refundable for a first home buyer. Hence you save that money.
I can go on every expense in terms of a typical desi method of tax avoidance.
Incidentally you could live in Brampton on Cash only dealings.
May be we can cut down on the slices at the local pizzeria or the pints at Kelseys to support a good cause.
This conversion to HST on a broader view is for the greater good.
May be Uncle Harper will start cutting the GST down from the current levels and our HST will become 10% which will be higher than the current PST of 8%. On the other side of the coin who will pay for the Ontario E-Health Scandal costing 1 Billion to us taxpayers?.
On the other hand if we look sensibly at a minimum wage of 10 bucks nothing - nothing can be made cost effectively in Ontario(Except POT /WEED grown on windowsills or on the backyard garden in between the tomatoes and other fruits).
If the question is looked as for us in place of me it would make more sense.
I'm just looking at the cup half full(ooops ..........didn't spill - Cheers Mate ).

Sunny Leone a true Canadian DESI now back in India !.

I am a Gents and not a Ladies.
Kudos,Vandemataram, You have done a great job, analyzing the spending (or should I say tax saving) habits of a typical desi. Whether it be a desi plumber or a "Indian" store (where most of the vegetables come from Mexico or California), there is no "tax" (or am I missing something?).
There was one time when I tried to pay my mechanic through my debit card - his immediate reaction was " saab, 13% tax lagega". I don't know the mechanism because he wasn't giving me a bill or break-up for the labor and parts. Perhaps he was trying to save on the bank charges (which could be between 1 to 3 % of the amount billed).
We really don't need to worry about the HST. Our desi brethren will find some way of beating the tax legally and share it here. Till that time or 1st July 2010, whichever is earlier, we can live in peace.
Eventually u or ur kids will pay for the tax hike, unless u move out of the country or ur kids decide not to comeback..
this 1000$ credit is a cheap way of the govt to appease people..

I get $1000 as incentive which can cover my HST costs for min. 4 or 5 years (except when I buy a car or house),
This tax is very bad for the people who spend all the money that they earn on stuff (typically Non VM's) and not for most Desi's who donot pay TAX generally anyway.
I was surprised to note on how a Desi's mind works WRT to evading taxes (apart from tge points listed above). I am not elobrating this further as it might ike some desi's who will not like to hear those details.

Count your blessings for at least you're getting $1000. It's a lot of money, isn't it? Here in BC they are going to rip us off with not handing down a single penny back to the taxpayers. So do your math. $1000 compared with $0 - what will you chose? I would go with HST + $1000, considering Governments enforce whatever they can and simply laugh at us poor taxpayers.
