I keep hearing positive reviews about French Immersion programs. But there are probably some downsides to it too.
I have questions like:
how will I help my kid settle into the new program (she will join in Grade 1)
Will I need tution classes?
Anything else?
Simple answer - you don;t need to help kids here to settle . Most of kids ( with exceptions ) are very good adapting and work independently . Have known many uneducated family with Kids in French immersion and never saw any gap that required filling .

I have to disagree with u on this... it will be tough task for non French speaking
parents to put kids on French program...
It may work in French dominate province like quebec where u expose to French everywhere... but city like toronto it will be tough...

Heard from a colleague whose kids have been going to FI since grade 1 ...
' They are able to converse in French although not as fluently as native French ...however upon a couple of months they should be able to assimilate comfortably in a French speaking community .
Advantage being bilingual they will have more opportunities and places for employment.
Downside - they are not as good in English thought they are okay'

I was thinking same for my kids especially when we are in Ottawa but always confused as I don't know French and will be tough time to guide them...
They are still in English medium but I can see if you know both languages there are lot and lot government job opportunities especially in Ottawa...

Every province has French as second language.. u don't need to put ur kids in French school to learn French.. they can always take French subject as second language... as long as they communicate in French it's enough for them to get job.
Yes most of the places required bilingual candidate but most of the documents r still in English... so u don't hv to be fluent bilingual. As long as kids can manage to speak and write basic stuff they will have high chance of getting job.
So English with French as second language is good options.
French school kids left out with strong English skills which is universal language.

From Language perspective , Young kids are teachers of first generation immigrant parents here , be it English or French.
Unless kids live in the province where the french language is prevalent , the kids will not gain fluency required for employment. So thinking FI will teach them everything is bit far fetched. I have asked my office colleagues who studied FI as kids in Toronto, they cannot converse in french. However having basic knowledge will be much better than having no knowledge.
Kids are mostly on their own here. My Son is in FI, I need not ask or teach him anything in french though I can because of my basic french knowledge which i gained in europe ( which is diminishing day by day). Rather if at all I 'll have french related interactions with my kid , it will be Me learning from him.
