Indeed a very useful piece of information for the new comers.
Thanks to all the contributors.
Infact, the entire CD is an amazing source of information for the newcomers
and makes their life little less miserable in terms of anxiety when landing for the first time and later on too.
My 2 cents of appreciation for those who tirelessly shell out their 2 cents or more .
A good GPS will set you back by a hundred, when it comes on sale. Look for one.
They are a great help when you are lost.
You need a good day to explore most of the areas, but not the interior of each block. For that you will need a good road map or a Pearly's Guide to get the details.
A TTC Subway map or a ride guide is the first to look for. Take the subway and the buses too to explore. More on it at the bottom.
Most of the newer buses have the road names and the intersections 'flashing inside' the top panel, as they cross, if they stop you can read their names. But you will have to do it during the day time. Night times it is a lot difficult, other than the Major intersections where they have well lit areas to tell you the details.
In some areas the street sign provides you with a number on the sign to tell you that the closest number of the building is the one posted.
YONGE divides the city EAST and WEST. So, also
BLOOR divides the city NORTH and SOUTH.
Then there are diagonals. That comes by travels and experience.
Steels has been the north boundary for a very long time.
It is nice to know the GRIDS in the city Blocks. There are Standard Blocks and Super Blocks. That gets tough because city planning has changed over the times and it becomes a night mare to give you the sizes. But it is nice to know the concept to get an idea and you can try and store the same in the mind.
The four Major routes that you should remember, are the bordering ones.
DON VALLEY on the East (Runs North South, so called)
The 427 (Etobicoe) on the WEST (Runs North South, so called)
The QUEENIE - GARDNER at the bottom, near the water front. (Runs EAST WEST)
The 401 at the top (RUNS EAST WEST)
That will give you the four Major boundaries.
All of these will show up on your GPS, when you make a trip with it in your travels. And you can never get lost. Lasts a very long time. Also it helps.
One ticket should do the days run, if you know how. But carry a water bottle and a sandwich. Make notes as you go along. Summer is the best time. The days are longer then.

No, Not at all. It is a great thing to know the system and it becomes wonderful thing after you master it. Now you got yourself started by arming yourself with the RIDE GUIDE, they were available before they started to post them on the internet and say print it out for yourself.
When you enter a subway or a bus they provide you with a TRANSFER, That transfer is good only for a certain period. So, take advatage of it. (Do not take the St.Clair Route) : http://www3.ttc.ca/Fares_and_passes/Fare_information/Transfers/index.jsp

For a start, only use the buses and the subways and stay with in the GTA Areas. That way you are able to continue traveling on One ticket on these exploration days. But it is not like having a daily pass. So, if you are not sure of this, for the first time please take a daily pass. Then you can explore for the whole day. Make sure you have the Proof of Payment when you enter the toll gate. You can call 393 4636 and get more details and keep the information handy.

In this link when you open it says** 22.5% in the top center. I have gone to as high as 6400 to see each and every location in crisp clear. All you have to use is the side traverse bars and the Bottom Slide bars. see it in action. First find out the location where you are currently. Then use it to explore. That will give you an idea how to use it.
Freddie.
** EDIT
Thanks a ton , Freddie for explaining the technique.
Guess with some research will be able to understand this better.
