EMBASSY OFFICIAL HELD FOR EXTORTION, HT correspondent, ND, April 15
Police have arrested a Canadian embassy official and his friend for trying to extort money from a visa applicant.
The mastermind behind the visa racket has been identified as Harpreet Singh, Singh and his friend Arvinder, who deals in second-hand cars, had tried to extort money from and applicant.
Gurvinder Singh (28) of Sirsa had applied for a visa in the CHC over a year ago. Gurvinder had submitted all the required documents., incl educational cert. residential proof, marriage proof etc. His wife, a Canadian citizen, da sponsored him.
Gurvinder complained to the police that he had been hetting calls over his cellphone that his visa appl has some problem and that it would be cancelled if he did not pay Rs. 50000/-
A trap laid. Meeting fixed at Bengali market on Wed. Arvinder came here with Gurvinder'visa file and demanded Rs. 50000/- from him. Cash exchanged the guy was in.
