My answer : Even AMIE is hired equivalent to engineers in india and the company moulds them, just fantastic, is it not? Just think of canada what is happening here?

Yes, but a classic case of different countries have a different system. Better or worst is subjective. You can't compare EVER. Just like you do not have P.Engg. in India, you do not have something similar to AMIE here in Canada. Being a highly regulated country and industries within, I do not think Canada would ever entertain Correspondence education for aspiring Engineers - highly unlikely. Leave aside correspondence or distance education, I am yet to come across any part-time Engineernig degree even in the second, third, fourth rung institutions.

Please enlighten me if any of the members here have encountered one.

Having a P.Eng license only means that you can sign the drawings and have to take responsibility for your design/calculations. You are an engineer the day you are hired to do an engineering job. Only difference is that you cannot use the title of "engineer".

And from what I have read, Indian companies have hard time finding skilled graduates, as Indian colleges do not teach soft skills either. And not every company wants to invest in training.

My answer : You are mixing politics and profession. In India company takes responsibility for wrong calculations. In canada, it looks indivedual is fired !! not the company. Where is the so called management then ?

Bridge collapse was just an example. How many engineers in India have been penalised for doing a bad job when it comes to infrastructure projects? I doubt every company is loyal to its employees and ready to take the responsibility of an engineer's bad job.

My answer : Setbacks have been every immigrated desi's part of life here to do a professional job ??

Setbacks are part of life in any part of world, that is where experience comes from.

Things are done differently in Canada than the way they are done in India. If you have the power and the will to change the system, go for it. Bridges have been built, cars have been assembled and medicines have been made by engineers in Canada since last 100 years. If system was so defective, it must have been broken down by now, but it isn't.

Bridge collapse in India does not show that Engineers in India has no knowledge of how to design and do calculations. The collapse was due to bad management but not due to lack of engg. knowledge.

If u employ Canadian engineer in India, bridge will still collapse.

Don't u know even the British used to say "India has good engineers but bad managers" So management study in India can be questioned not the technical skills.

The discussion is not about bad design or lack of technical competency. The discussion is about accountability and taking responsibility for your actions. A professional engineer is accountable for his/her design.
