Hi all,
I am a Malaysian Desi due to land with my family in Toronto (we are PRs) come early June. Wife and I have more or less narrowed down to London or the Niagara region (St. Catharines) to reside. We would be happy to get more info on these areas in terms of jobs, place to stay, community etc. I am a cook and the wife has been working in the bank for 15 years. We understand that its gonna be tough for us intially and we are mentally prepared. Any feedback is appreciated.
Thanks.
If you share your reasons for short-listing London and St. Catherine's, we might be able to help you choose one or the other.
Both are nice areas, really depends on what is it that you are looking for in a town.
Regarding your respective professions, there aren't many popular, happening eating places in either town, although St. Catherine's being closer to Niagara may be better off in this regard.
From the financial industry perspective, London is better off because of the presence of large, traditional insurance companies.
Not retail banks, per se, though National Bank and TD have a large presence there.
But London is the home of London Life Insurance Company and Canada Life insurance company also has a presence there.
There are jobs in the automotive industry due to the promixity to Woodstock and Windsor, but I don't know if that industry is still hiring or not.
You are also relatively close to Hamilton and the Cambridge/Kitchener area, where you may find more job options.
By and large, if you have targeted certain jobs or industries and have done the research regarding jobs in these areas, it is ok.

Hi Pratickm,
Thanks for your reply.
I was looking at Niagara because of its hotels and restaurants (as a cook I might get a job there). I have not really done a thorough research on London but it does have a big Indian community presence there. However I do know more hospitality jobs are available in Niagara compared to London. I might be wrong though. Hope to get views from other Desis as well.
Thank you.

Quote:I would not call it big, esp. vis-a-vis Kitchener area and of course compared to Toronto.

Quote:Yes, that is correct. Niagara primarily being a tourist area, has more hospitality jobs.

I have sent you pm of the person to contact if you need help in st. catherine.
