Coice of a car depends on a number of factors like:

1. the purpose it is going to be used for - travel to and fro from work, or only for shopping and/or family outing in the evenings/weekends, driving to up north for fun (SUV)

2. to be used for how many persons - single/couple/family (two door/four door)

3. type of person driving it - sport loving, family type,

4. gender of person driving it - oh yes, that can make a difference too, both from viewpoint of comfort (size/frontal view) or from social standpoint (surprsing, but it makes a difference!!).

5. egoist preferences - a Jetta might serve the purpose but someone might want a BMW - both are German though. or the other way round - one could afford a Lincoln but would buy Taurus.

6. budget - sometimes considered most important factor, but not really so, since in any particular budget, one can get so many cars to satisfy the other five points mentioned above.

the above is not an exhaustive list, but with so many variables most of which relate to personal preferences, how can you expect someone to advice you without giving any input from your side.

What if I asked you a question : I have just shifted to a new residence, please advice what kind of a dining table should I buy?

My personal preference is a Jaguar XJ-6 or a Lincoln towncar - but due to a lot of reasons which cannot satisfy my personal preference, I drive a Camry XLE V6!!

Since you are new, low on budget and also want a family car, I would advise you to go for a Toyota Corrolla - anywhere between 1998 to 2001 depending on what your budget might be.

Toyotas are very reliable cars, though more expensive than a similar American car, but for used cars, Japanese cars are the best bet, specially for a newcomer, who has to get used to so many things in driving in Canada.

They are cheaper, usually, than a Honda Civic. Honda as a brand is more expensive than Toyota.

Depending on your priorities ... if you want just nice and relaible car ....any japanese make not more than 10yrs old would give you a good value for money.
try mazda, mitsubishi as well these are equally good brands and less pricy than honda / toyota.
another good option is to get the car professionally inspected before you buy...it will not cost more than $75 but is well worth an investment.

My first car in US was an old tercel for $2000....everyone told me i will regret taking a 90 model , i could not afford more at that time, i got it inspected and after getting a thumbsup i bought it ...it served me great and i sold it for $1800 after a year and 20,000 miles.

if you are planning to spend more for a new car give a test drive to mazda 6 ....it is incredible for its class.
