No, photocopies only.
Checkout the VFS site.

imwhoever, your experience is more recent than mine.
So sure it is possible they have stopped returning documents now.

Visitor visa is one type of Temporary Resident visa. In many other categories also TRV are issued. Its broadly non immigrant visa.
