Details of her murder - couple of chilling statements that were released.
Her mother says that she thought her husband \"would only break her arms and legs\" not kill her !!!
She wailed -
“Oh God, Oh God. . . Oh my Aqsa, you should have listened,” “Everyone tried to make you understand. Everyone begged you, but you did not listen. . .”

Her husband justifies the murder by saying - “This is my insult. My community will say you have not been able to control your daughter. This is my insult. She is making me naked.”

She told police that in her Pakistani culture, if a daughter doesn’t listen to her parents, she is punished. “Either they kill the girl or turn her out of the house,” she said.

I dont mean to bash Pakistani or Muslim culture in particular - after all as desi's we are all part of that culture....

2 men plan and strangle with bare hands - their own daughter/sister and think that some sort of imaginary honour has been restored.

Are there more Muhammad and Waqas Pervez's out there?

Will you please think about what has happened in this cursed family and change your thoughts?

I have seen people like that in my community (punjabi/sikh) here in BC and elsewhere.
These men are sick and twisted. They are also insecure and have no sense of their own self..only worried about what others think about them.Im not referring to just this poor girls family but all who do or even think about this.

This is why I have a hate on for people who insist on coming to canada but holding on to horrible old world traditions like "family honor". There is no such thing but in people's own minds.

The poor girl.... I hope her father and brother are sufficiently punished by the law and also shunned by the community. However that is unlikely because a) punishments are weak in Canada's justice system and b) Too many desi's here think the way this girls family did.

Its just all SICK!

While I do condemn what the girl's father and brother did, I do detect a hint of racism in Canadian media. Whether it is this case or another recent case where a Sikh men murdered his daughter-in-law, media is quick to attack the culture which causes the men to commit such act. Every culture has its positive and negative sides. Such acts tend to highlight the negative aspects of South Asian culture.

On a side note, I recollect the families mourning the losses of their daughter/sisters killed by that pig farmer in BC. However, where were those families when there sister/daughter was selling herself on the road? Burning most of the bridges once you turn 18 is a negative side of a culture that media tends to ignore.

yes - there is a strong correlation between aspects of south asian culture and these honour killings. There are other asian (south east asian) cultures where this has occured, but it is not an aspect of 'western society' in any case.
Of course such acts do highlight the negative aspects of south asian culture.

What culture condemns burning bridges at the age of 18? Moving out or being independant yes - but its not a cultural norm that I am aware of. Secondly, why do we need to automatically bring in the negatives of western culture..this discussion is about Aqsa Pervez's horrible murder at the hands of those who in THEIR culture are the ones who are sworn to protect her.

This is not south asian bashing, but bringing light to a very important issue that continues on in this country, a land where people should have the freedom to express themselves and be who they want to be, even if they are under 18. Aqsa Pervez had the right to grow up as a 'normal' teenager since her parents made the decision to move their family to Canada. She had the right to express her opinions and dress the way she wanted to.

Sometimes I wonder - is it more the parents fault, or is itsomething wrong with their culture?

I agree with morning rain.

No point in resentment when an incident brings to light a fatal flaw in south asian culture.

Muhammed Pervez was driven by the fact that his daughter was not in his control. He would rather end her life than let it stay that way.

Was Asqa an individual or his property?

How is it, that in his mind - his honor is restored by killing his own daughter?

Do not let our embarrassment at this abhorrence in our culture put us on the defensive. Let us not scramble for the "racism defense"

Let us all condemn it with equal fervor with no "whiles" at the beginning or "buts" at the end tagged on.

Hopefully that prevents any other Asqa's from happening.
