hi
We need to replace our AC ( 22+ years old ) and got couple of quotes on Carrier. One of agents is actually recommending us to replace our Furnace also. The Furnace is relatively new ( replaced 4 years back but mid efficiency ). Since we had done our energy audit done last year he feels it still would make sense to replace the furnace with high efficiency since the rebate we are getting is huge ... The difference is about 2500 bucks ( i.e. if we go for AC alone or AC + Furnace) ...

Not sure if the agent is just trying to maximize his commission or is genuine ?

Any comment ?

Yes u figured it right ..There is absolutely no reason to change your 4 yr old furnace . You will not be able to justify the cost difference in coming years . Also mind it that furnaces that are eligible for rebate ( ECM Variable Speed Motor ) breaks more often than regular high efficiency furnaces . Repairs on them after warranty will run into 800 $ or more .
Another fact : Mid Eff breaks less often than High Eff since they have only one heat exchanger and less sensors . Repairs/parts are cheaper on mid eff .

Don't replace the 4 year old furnace. That's a rip off. Furnaces last good 15 years or more.

Furnance with ECM motor is totally screwed. One of friend who bought new house has this. In last 3 years he had to make one call every month. All of sudden the fan stopped working, replacement quote for board was $1289 including taxes. My friend house is energy certified and he curse himself everyday for buying that option for the house. There is one problem or another.

Forgot to mention earlier that buying a 16 SEER AC cannot work on its optimum capacity if you do not have variable speed ECM motor furnace .
If you do not have any plans to buy DC motor furnace in the near future than buying 16 SEER AC makes no sense .
I hope that salesman has revealed this fact to you.
Good Luck

Wow Thanks guys for the amazing response. Yup BTW the sales agent was from SEARS who advised us on replacing both furnace and AC. Anyways we plan to go with a company called Four Seasons Air Control based out of Mississauga ( Britannia). Price seems to be reasonable ( much better than Sears). checked BBB acreditation and they have A+. We plan to go for Carrier Performance 15. He is quoting about 3750 + Tax ( minus gov rebates). There is a 10 yr manufacturer warranty on parts and 1 year on labour from this guy ( I've asked for 5 year labor for the same price).

Let me know if this sounds OK to you guys ?? Anything that I need to keep in mind ? Any feed back on Four seasons ?
