I am a Permanent Resident and planning to get married in Pakistan.

Currently at CIC the application times for spouse is listed at around 22 months.
That is quite long, as ideally a newly wed couple would like to be together as soon as possible and not wait for 2 years.

Before I get married, I wanted to explore alternatives:

1) Is it possible for me to invite her over as girlfriend on a visit visa, get married and then start the application process. From my understanding her visa will expire even if she is married and will need to extend it. Is it realistic to assume that the visa will be extended?

2) If she applies as an international student, come here get married and continue her education. I am assuming that the application should finish before her student visa gets expired. Is this way a possibility?

Is there any other way that I have not thought about?

Have they just extended the wait time for spouse to 22 months? 3 years' ago I sponsored my wife and it was just about 3-6 months (she was here in about 5 months).

Is it really true? If it is then I am not sure what has taken over CIC these days(Conservatives..). They even extended the wait time for Citizenship to 2 years. I applied and got my citizenship in 8 months in 2009, just two years ago. So, it's not only parents' sponsorship alone, they have extended the wait times for virtually all the other categories.

Darn! Two years for spousal visa? That's hell lot of time and really empathize with the OP.

Do they really want immigrants, or just don't want anymore from South Asia. Guess, they are looking for more applications from East European nations. Don't want to open a pandora box, but is it the skin color that is dominating Conservatives?

Sorry for digressing. Just wanted to make sure if it's really 22 months?

It is becoming rediculous waiting...
Even for India, they are now saying 7 months officially on the website.
Parents sponsorship more than 6 years

She can stay on illegally if she is married to a PR or citizen and has a file for spousal sponsorship in process.

Only catch is she cannot leave the country and reenter if her student visa has expired as she wont have a legal state in the country and any new visitor /student visa application will get reject.

Also Incanada spousal applications take double the time of out of canada spousal applications.

The student visa will be at least around 2 years and as the CIC site states, the sponsor application from within Canada takes around 18 months. And after student visa, they also get Work permit for a few years. So we should be good with that.

just wanted to know if from past experiences can someone confirm if the CIC processing times are accurate?

I mean is their time lines the worst/best/average case scenario?

and will it affect if the application is for a male or female?
