Thank you all for the replies. Finally opened with BMO in the neighborhood. They have given me 3 months free banking; by then, I expect to have the 4K balance to get the fees waived.

I did look at HSBC, but RFD was full of negative feedback.

I might open the SBI SS a/c as suggested by Fido down the line; but with two of us withdrawing salary, 2 withdrawal limit is too restraining for us. Above that, there is a $25 fee!

Btw, Scotia was giving 5 months of free banking; but after that, they charge $12 pm.
