One of my friend's son got admitted to the Undergrad Program at York U (B.Sc Computer Science or Engineering ...not yet decided which one to go for....but I guess the first year is common)....the fee is exorbitant...around 23K CAD per year....I would appreciate if guys on CD can provide some input on funding and ways to get scholarship and awards..so that he can complete the education and land something decent.....He might be looking to work as well (on Campus) or off campus ( i think canada allows off campus work option for students...)....Please guys....appreciate your inputs...as I am currently in India...my friend is expecting that I provide some kind of guidance for his son....also initial support as well.....Thanks
Please guys...appreciate your responses
The link here is just one sample of what you might find for scholarships. I am assuming your friend's son is an international student.

The tuition should have not been a surprise as they would have been disclosed during the application process. That should have given your friend enough info to decide 23k is afforadable or not.
Having said that, based on a very quick search I did, I am assuming there are scholarships available for international students. You and your friend have to research and identify the appropriate scholarships. Most of them are competitive and have deadlines. Considering, school begins in another 2 to 4 weeks, I am not sure if the candidate has enough time to research, apply and secure any of the scholarships. A lot of these scholarships do not cover 100% of the stated expenses.
One thing to remember is the 23k might be an estimate based on tuition, boarding and other living expenses. A freshman might be required to stay in University boarding, but after that, might have the option to cut the costs down by staying off campus with roomates.
If your friend is expecting you to provide for initial support and if that means financial support, you can be upfront and let him know how much you can and cannot support.
I don't know about off-campus employment, but the candidate normally has to arrive at the campus and look for on-campus opportunities (libraries, dorms, kitchens, etc) that will help offset at least some of the costs.
In any case, notwithstanding a student loan, the parent has to be prepared to support a good portion, if not all, of the education cost.

Your friend should not rely on aid/ part time jobs to pay for undergrad education.
Take admission only if he can afford the tuition without aid/ part time jobs, reason being one should be covered on all fronts in case things dont work out as planned.
Undergrad tuition waivers/aid are rare unless person is a genius.
Best to come to NA for masters where most of the time international students get some on campus jobs to pay for their tuition.
Thanks for the replies guys...Yes, he is coming as an International Student...though they are willing to pay the first year tuition + plus some more expenses...they are also expecting their son might land some scholarship/internship after the end of Fall and Winter semester....and might be able to save some money for the second year....in any case how is the course...would he be able to get some internship work...I have met the kid and he is really smart...knows Java and some other programming languages....where and how to look for internships ...and all...even getting 15bucks an hour he can save atleast half the fees by working in the summer sem....appreciate your response..
15$ per hour are hard to find for part time students.. he has to be very lucky..
Most students end up working in Tim hortons, Mcdees or any other fast food place for min wage, ~10$ per hr
