Hi,
I got admitted in to a Canadian college for 2007 January semester for a full time program, one year duration. I am from India. I paid 80% of tuition fee and I applied for visa.
Actually I planned to pay 80% of tuition fee and take 2 months of living expenses with me to support myself in Canada.
I thought that as soon I land in Canada I can work off-campus and pay remainder 20% college fee and my living expenses.
But recently I have learnt that off-campus work permit is allowed after 6 month of study in the college, Student should have registered full-time at a post-secondary institution for at least 6 out of the last 12 months.
But I am not sure about this information. If I do not work off-campus for 6 months, I cannot pay my remaining tuition fee and living expenses.
Can I apply for off-campus work permit in the month of January 2007 and start working off-campus from February 2007?
If that is not possible can I work off-campus with out work permit.
I need your valuable advice, please reply because right now I am planning to quit study in Canada and continue my job in India.
Thanks in advance.
yours sincerely

manisha, u r not the rule and law maker....***i may sound rude to some people but my words sound what is reality***
yes, there is rule of 6 month full time studies in last 12 months, to apply for the visa. no second thought abou it, and u can't change it.....this means u will only get ur work permit for 20 hrs off campus only after june 2007, and that too if u continusly study for those months. cause if the semester gets over in april, and u plan to drop out for summers, then u can't get work ex.
second thing, i suggest u to ask college and withdraw ur overpayed fees (and they have to do it, they can't keep ur money without ur permission, and if they do u can sue them), so u can support urself for early 6 months.
third option, U CAN WORK ONLY ILLEGAL, AND I AM STRICTLY AGAINST SUCH STUDENTS, SO BEWARE IF A PERSON LIKE ME CAUGHT U, U CAN BE SENT BACK TO INDIA WITH PERMANENT BAN ON COMING TO CANADA.
I personally hate such students or people on visitor visa, who work here illegaly, cause they are putting black spot on the character of every indian or desi coming to this beautiful land. and I feel the first thing is to deport such people immediately back to their homelands. they are also taking away the job oppurtunities of desis who have legal PR status, or work permits.
i hope i have explained enough to u....
take care and do ask if u need any other suggestion
thanking u
duncan

Did they approve your study permit? I doubt they'll approve it if you lack even tuition funds. What duncan said is right, you can work only after 6 months of full-time study so you'll have to study through 6 months of college and then apply for off campus work permit. Even then I highly doubt you'll be able to support yourself and pay the remaining tuition. You can only earn to support yourself, (20 hrs a week, consider a wage of 10$/hr and you make 200$/week, thats 800$/month) you can only pay for rent and supplies from that money. If you are really keen on doing that course, then you should get a student loan for the remaining amount (which I'm guessing is not going to be a lot since you've covered 80% of the tuition), once you come here, work on-campus for the first 6 months and then get a job off campus. That's how everyone does it.

Manisha, u could come here and do the job easily witout having any work permit, yes illegaly. And thousand of Intenational students are doing that since many years and i never heard that anybody caught by Canadian Govt. and send back to India.
I would also like to mention about what duncan said, there are hundreds of immigrant who entered in Canada as a Student only. And ther are many immigrants who do legal jobs for few months and then leave the job and take the benefits from Canadian govt by saying they dont have job , during this time they also do ILEGAL job called Cash-jobs. On top of that many immigrants take the undue advantages of Canadian Govt. policies which actually made to help immigrants, and THESE ARE THE REAL PPL WHO SPOIL INDIA'S NAME.
And about job opportunities in Canada, if any body HAS A TALENT/SKILLS OF HIS FIELD , he need not have to worry about students doing job as they can not get any good jog like what they can get as an immigrants. ONLY THOSE WHO DOES NOT DESERVE TO BE ACTUAL SKILLFUL IMMIGRANTS, are need to be scare of sharing job by students.
ANYWAY FOR U MANISHA, i could say dont worry about money , u could easily get the job(so called ilegal)even part-time, which is enough to bear ur expenses without disturbing your study.
All the best!
I hope you were being sarcastic Roopmay. Just because you don't know of anyone who got caught doing illegal jobs doesn't mean they don't get caught. Besides, whenyou are working illegally you have absolutely no laws to protect you from your employer, no minimum wage standard and the biggest drawback of being deported. Remember, the fact that you were deported will affect your chances of immigrating/visiting anywhere in the world. It's like a black spot you cannot erase. Think your decision through.

I didn't mean that illegal job forever, but till the time u get legal work-permit or immigration.
Afterall, big success never comes without doing hardwork and taking RISK.
Good Luck!
doing illegal job is not the hard work, it is the shameful act students/visitors perform. and this is one reason y some of the hard working students back home don't get visa, cause visa officer has in his mind the reputation of desis in Canada.
I strongly beleive to go by only law and order, and not cross the lines for few bucks. u need to think about the expenditure in canada before coming here. and just u r lucky doesn't mean that no one gets deported.
