Hi,

I have a question regarding my specific situation. I will appreciate if any tax exprts can advise.

I have recently moved to Korea. I will be staying here for a few years. In order to avoid paying Canadian taxes, I am thinking of declaring myself non-resident for tax purposes as of 31st December 2011.

Now my question:

1. I was studying in France last year and paid significant tuition fees. I would like to get part of the tuition reimbursed as tax credits. (Either now or when I come back e.g. 2016, 2017). Would declaring myself non-resident as of 31st December 2011 cause any problem in the tuition tax credit reimbursement process ?

2. More basic question: How do I declare myself non-resident ? Someone told me that I need to declare so in my tax return. But I don't find any option in Tax Studio.

Thank you for your help.

1. File your tax for the year 2011 along with your tuition amount and after that follow step 2 below. Your unused tax credit will be in your account till the time you come back. In order to get your tax credit against your tuition fees you need to have income in Canada which probably will happen in 2016 or later.

2. Tax Studio or for that matter any tax software does not have an option to declare NR status. For that you have to file form NR73 -> http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pbg/tf/nr73/README.html
