One Q on the landing funds, since we are going to return back in a week is it necessary to show proof of funds of 17K for the three of us?

for landing funds , You must bring 17K else will not be able to enter Canada. you have few options :
1. convert the Rs. to US dollars and bring Cash. it will be acceptable at border, you can take back and you can use the dollars during US stay.
Issue here is carrying so much of cash plus you will have issues when you take them back to India, Indian customs will not buy your immigration theory easily.

2. Convert to CAD cash and bring here, open an account in bank when you reach in Canada and place the money here, take debit and credit card from same bank. ask for online ids so that you are able to operate the account while in US. Some banks here also open an additional acct in USD linked to canadian one. Transfer most of the money to USD acct and use it without hassle while in US.

Issue in above 2 options is converting to Cash will cause lot of loss in conversion

to minimise conversion loss

3. Go to your indian bank and get the bank draft made . take your passport as they need to see your visa. the conversion rate is less when u deal with bank and then follow option 2 when you reach in Canada. Bank draft is admissible at border as proof of fund plus easy to carry and I think your visa will save you the some fees.

4. btw you also have options to open account in Bank of Nova Scotia (pronounced Sko-shia) while in India itself. They have branch in Delhi and one in down south somewhere. Call them to find out. it must be done a couple of months before landing as they need time to get approvals from their canadian branch. Show them the visa, transfer money by cheque, you will get good conversion rate and take the bank statement. you have to select a canadian branch where you will go , look an address near scarborough. HDFC has some tie up you can call thme also or check online. That way your credit card etc. will be ready and handed over to you on visit home branch here on first day and you may not have address related issues.

Again above info is first hand info, I personally took mix of option 3 and 4 .

Is it necessary to show the funds in CAD?
I have my funds in fixed deposits with SBI in rupees of-course. I was thinking of getting a statement of the deposits. Also 100-200 CAD for expenses in the 1 week i'm staying at my relatives. For higher CAD expenses I can use my credit card.
Is that ok?

At landing they do all formalities regardless of your intended period of stay .Hence it is important that the necessary landing funds be brought as 'liquid' in CAD or in exceptional cases USD .

You can get a draft made for the requisite CAD in India and after returning ( with in a month ) get the draft cancelled - This way you might save on some charges ..

For a week or 10 days , for a family of 3 , I d reserve at least CAD 500/- ... to be on a safer side ...Use your credit card liberally here ....

Bring in requisite money while landing was a condition known and agreed by you and it is important for obvious reasons which may not apply to you necessarily .

Thats right , Prefer to bring in CAD/USD only be it draft or cash. Bringing Rs. in hand might be still accepted but keeping it in bank in India and showing statement will NOT work. It defies the logic of immigration where bringing cash to this country is ulterior motive and settling you comes bit later. They need skilled (and self feeding) immigrants , remember !

Hmm. I would get a DD for the funds then.
