I'm looking for return ticket to India now.....
How many days will I need to be Canada before I get back and what all should I do?
In some other posts I saw some suggestions of not going for SIN or bank account if one doesn't intend to stay on. I presume that for PR i would just have to give my relatives address at the airport. What about OHIP and child benefits stuff. Should I just apply for them indicating that I may return back to Canada at a later date?
Your suggestions please....
Lalitha,
You are smart, worth of immigration to Canada.
You can leave upon landing. However ,if you want to apply for OHIP , Child tax benefits you can stay for 1 week or so. Sometimes, if your photo gets lost / misplaced, the authorities will ask you to appear at a local centre for re photography. This is rare but not impossible. That call will come in 1 month or so. I think there is a work around to this, where you can state that you are not in Canada and get a travel permit from outside Canada to visit Canada within a period of 2 years.
OHIP is given after 3 months only but you can apply on landing. One of OHIP conditions is that you need to stay in Ontario 180 days in a year.
Child benefit / UCCB will be given only for the time you / your child stays in Canada. It will be peanuts compared to the cost of living in Canada.
To get maximum child/ UCCB, declare that your world wide income for the year 2012 was $ 20,000 or less. Else you will receive only a marginal amount.
As we have spoken over phone before, you can call me for more information.
Peace

I am a Gents and not a Ladies.
I would suggest to take PR Card only if you wish to be away for some time .... Avoid having any financial ties with Canada if you do not wish to pay Canadian Tax on world income .
Later on when you come for good , you can apply for all these things . .. Doing it now may not yield you any benefit .

Also San Hugo's advice appears good to me ....And if they have not changed the rules , you have 3 years to stay out of Canada after landing to maintain your PR status ...

I'm going along with an-hugo advice......
One Q on the landing funds, since we are going to return back in a week is it necessary to show proof of funds of 17K for the three of us?
Yes .

I would say take Canadian PR and settle in city close to US border, there are many people who work for MS living in Canada. Your husband can continue to work in USA and you can look for a job locally.
Just check, if your husband lose's his job in USA will he be able to continue staying in US. If not, then PR route is safest. Even if it takes 2-3 yrs and in long run you do not want to live in Canada then also I would suggest that purchase a house or condo, you can sell the house when you move its better than giving rent and you may not gain in 2 yrs but in case you end up deciding to live in Canada then you won't be 2-3 yrs behind in settling.
