Thinking of painting the house. Need input on following:
1) Which brand is better brand in the paint?
2) Which type is better obviously high gloss I would prefer to avoid
3) If the drywall is already painted and I am planning to use the same or little more darker shade, do I need to sand, prime and then paint or can I simply paint over exisitng paint.

TIA for the responses.

1) All branded products maintain a minimum standard so difficult to differentiate them.
2) Indoor, I would prefer egg shell on walls and glossy on trims/baseboards/doors.
3) No need to sand or prime. Just need to know if your old paint is water based or oil based. You can use oil base paint on top of water base but not the other way around. To find out, wet a small piece of cloth with nail polish remover and rub over the paint. If water based, it will show on the cloth. If your existing paint it water based, try to keep the new paint also water based. Usually, water base paints are good for domestic use.

1. I used Behr from Home Depot. A bit more expensive. I am sure there are other brands that are quite good as well. My paint has lived up after 9 years with minimal fading.

2. Gloss or semi-gloss is preferred in "wet" rooms (bathroom, laundry, etc) where cleaning is easier. Gloss shows any imperfections more than the matt.

3. As long as the existing paint is fairly neutral (white, off-white, light cream, etc), no priming is required. You can paint over it. Same with using same colors as existing. If you have darker colors, you may need one or two coats of prime before starting a new color. Either way, sanding is not required unless you are trying to smooth out any imperfections on the drywall.

HD sells 2 in 1 Paint with Primer . Its a good option when you are planning to change color . It is thicker and outcome is better than regular paint .

Bhootnath if you are painting yourself than do not forget to buy
1. Good rollers ( if you are not done at the end od the day than just roll the used rollers in a polythene and keep in freeze . They will be as good as fresh to use next day )
2. Halogen lamp - Often sold for arond 10-15 $ . It will help you to spot the spots where roller didn't do through smoothly .
3. Masking tape : Frog is little expensive but best .

Good luck . Painting is infact lot of fun .
