Recently, I have started the task of painting my house.

I do not see any discussions related to that topic. Would it be a good idea to create a section on Home Improvement/ Interior Decoration ?????

It is a first time project for me, I had no idea what type of paints to buy, where to buy, how to paint, what things to keep in mind etc. etc? I could find some books in local library, as well as some information on homedepot-rona website and some information from colleague-friends.

I am not into gardening, but that too can be discussed

Just my views

Good idea!

As per Clayton research Canadians will spend almost 65 billion dollars on home renovation in 2006.

Moderators should consider this request for sure.

I painted my entire house and I took two Christmas holidays (2 yrs) to complete the project. I went to Home Depot and used Behr as the paint supply.

Behr (and other brands as well) provide a lot a information in the form of catalogs, brochures, etc. Go over to Home Depot and pick out the catalogs from the Behr section.

I would stick with one brand of paint once you choose the brand and start the painting. Also, start in an area that you can afford to screw up. I started in my laundry room. Inside of a closet is another good test location.

Paints these days are mostly water based and hence easily can be cleaned and has almost no odor. General guidance - use lighter colors for smaller spaces and dare some darker shades in bigger areas. I have also done two tone colors in big rooms such as my bedroom. The North/South narrow width wall has darker shade while the other two higher width walls have lighter shades.

Behr paints come in different finishes - from Matte to full gloss. I used in between - "Satin Enamel". Finishes towards glossyness can be used for high "traffic" areas such as kitchen and bathrooms.

Just to get you started, I can give you some shades that we used. You can find them online at http://www.behr.com" rel="nofollow">LINK or at home depot color palletes.

Classic Olive - Fireplace mantel
Caraway - Family room fireplace wall
Winter Mood - rest of family room and kitchen
Haze - Other areas - Dining, family, foyer, etc
Serene - Guest bath
Sage Tint- Guest bed
Cup of Cocoa- Stairs high wall
Cinnamon Spice - Foyer raised ceiling wall
Fresh Praline - Master bath
Gathering Place - two walls of our bedroom
Pismo Dunes - baby's room
New England Brick - two other walls of the bedroom

Hope this helps and good luck.
