We did our landing in April 2009 and gave one copy of the list of 'Goods to follow' to the Immigration. We now plan to bring in our goods from our home country by March 2014. Please advise if those things can be brought by container into Canada without any duty or tax. Is there anything additional we need to keep in mind? Really appreciate your feedback, Thank you

What I will be writing under this is my own opinion and you are free to accept it or reject it.

ALL THE ITEMS DECLARED IN YOUR GOODS TO FOLLOW LIST ARE FREE TO GET ENTRY INTO CANADA. ALSO THEY HAVE BEEN USED BY YOU. (FOR A LONG WHILE)

You have had nearly five years under your belt here in Canada. So you currently know the cost of things here and also what works here and what will not.

What dictates now is the available space for the goods that you want to bring into your home. Is it new, is it worth bringing in and if so what is the cost to you and the time and effort that you will be putting into it for the shipping.

The time and expense in preparing the goods for shipment at the HOME end. Cost of Paper work, way bill, consignment documents, carting it to the wharf for shipment and the cost of shipping, just the sea transport are all at the HOME end is yours to bear, at that end. COST OF SEA FREIGHT. Then the custom clearance here and the transhipment from the warehouse to your place of residence, where ever it is, here in Canada also needs to be worked out. You will have to set it up at you residence here at your convenience, because it it is only up to your FRONT DOOR. Also you must cover all of the items with sufficient insurance.

Just to give you an example. a sofa that weighs 140 pounds will set you back by $400, in the freight cost alone.(SHIPPING- OCEAN FREIGHT) The other expenses you pay at home end and here is at your own expense also.

The Electronics work here on a 110 volt 60 cycle system. Most of them will fail ultimately. So, sell them, or give them away and let someone else enjoy it at the home end and buy one that is equal and NEW and they come on sale here for a decent price on BOXING DAY.

Pots and pans are a NO NO. Other sentimental things, such as cutlery etc., you will have to decide as to its value and how much of a compromise you have to do to maintain peace in the family. Pictures and arts are valuable so cover them well and pack them well for shipment. But remember one thing, if they get lost or damaged, you will only get a DOLLAR A POUND from the insurers. No shipping costs will be paid to you, but they might say that they will ship another consignment FREE for you.

You say that you have a list of things. Now you can determine from the list you have, what it is that you must bring to Canada. Some are extremely bulky, some are essentials, and a few of the electrical goods and a lot of sentimental items that which you do not want to leave behind.

I know it is a difficult decision. So, put your heads together and make a good decision but prepare yourself for all of the above plus any other delays and sundry expenses that will crop up as it progresses. The big chunk is taken by the SEA FREIGHT. Find out how much it will be. FIRST.

That is why I said put the shoe on the other foot, or is it the thinking cap.

FH.

Thank you for your reply. To clarify, I had the goods to follow list stamped from customs while landing in 2009. Can I still ship the goods declared earlier in the list without any tax or is there an expiry date like 1/2/3 years from landing? Is there an expiration date when those goods in the list can be brought into Canada without any import tax?

The items declared and with the list stamped is good till you bring the items in, whenever you get settled and think it is the right time to do so.

Some do it the soonest. A few after they get a job. A few of them bring it in after a few years. FIVE years is O.K. too. But they might question you why so late. So approach the CBSA to verify. They are open M-F.

If your Goods to Follow list did not get stamped when you landed, it may still be possible to bring your goods in, however, you may have to prove that you have previously owned these goods.

We strongly suggest that it may be best that you contact the Border information Services (BIS) directly for some clarification on your own situation.

If you call during office hours (08:00 - 16:00) local time, you can speak to an agent for more specific information. Here is the contact information:

Call BIS within Canada (1-800-461-9999)

Call BIS from outside of Canada (long-distance charges apply):
(204) 983-3500 or (506) 636-5064.
