Hello,
Just thought I'd put in a few details of what I went through while clearing my cargo from customs and how to collect it. It is a bit long though.
- Even though I had provided a goods to follow list when I landed 3 years ago, when I finally came to Canada for good, I carried another detailed goods to follow list which was submitted to the customs at the Airport and it was stamped by them and a customs duty payment form (duty payable was CAD 0) attached to this list.
- I made the list extremely detailed eg kinds of books, number of blankets, numbers of places crockery is for, etc etc.
- The freight forwarder sent this list along with the airway bill.
- When the goods came, took our copy of the list of goods + the list stamped by the Customs dept at the airport+copy of AWB+PR card of the consignee+1 piece of proof of address (phone bill) and went to air cargo terminal.
- The Cargo terminal is located at 2580, Britannia Rd East.
- Public transport route (from TO) is to catch Mississauga Transit Bus No 57N from Islington subway station and ask the driver to let you off at the Cargo terminal just short of \"Customs\".
- Be careful of the bus schedule, when I went there, there was a bus at 1333 hrs and then again at 1542 hrs even though the frequency was slightly better early morning and later in the afternoon. Not too sure about Saturdays/Sundays service though.
- Collected the original AWB + cargo arrival advice and then went to the customs department (about 1/2 km away), where the Customs officer went through my copy of the list. He took copies of the PR card, Goods to follow list, and address proof and then asked me whether I was importing drugs, arms, swords, bullion and other such stuff. (I said No truthfully).
- Customs officer stamped the list and gave me another customs duty paid challan (CAD 0). He also stamped a copy of cargo arrival advice.
- Took this set of documents back to air cargo terminal office, where I had to pay terminal handling fees. They then stamped the cargo arrival advice as charges paid.
- This advice was handed into another desk in the same office and goods prepared for loading into the truck.
- I arranged for a truck (called a cube van) to ferry the goods home.
Just a couple of pointers -
-Track the status of your goods yourself.
- Be prepared to do some heavy lifting yourself, so carry a pair of work gloves!!!
- Be careful to collect the goods within 2 days, after which demurrage starts (18 cents per kilo + CAD 20 per day).
Trust this is of help to my fellow desis.
Rgds,
Newboyo
Very helpful information. Just to update that new cargo terminal is located at Vista Cargo Centre, 6500 Silver Dart Drive, Mississauga.
