My car's muffler needs to be done .. I m assuming one of the pipes might have cracked .
Should I get it done at my local mechanic / garage or should I take it to a muffler place like JPG Exhaust , Scott Hot Rod or Zorro ?
I intend to get a stock job done not any customized so wondering if I need to visit any of these specialists ?
Are they more expensive ?

First you need to be sure if it is the pipe or the actual muffler.
The exhaust system consist of the adapter (or coupler connected to your engine). the after convertor, the muffler and the tail pipe.
Pipes can be fixed by any mechanic as long as he has the welding equipment.
For mufflers - please check with your mechanic if he has any idea about it - there is some level of technology involved.
Decide based on the knowledge of the mechanic and costs quoted by the shop.
Check your PM.

Thanks Hiren .
Yes you are right ... there is a CO and catalytic converter unit before the muffler .. good to become aware of the adapter ...
Let me take the car Saturday to my mechanic and see if it is just pipes or more than that in which case I think I might take it to Midas in stead of going to specialized muffler shops as last time when I visited Zorro , they had quoted me $350/- but my mechanic was able to do the job in $60/-
Have replied to your pm..Thanks .

I will provide you here with a link to a website. Please explore the same to its maximum. Reach the type of car you own, with the year and model too. There you will find what are all of the things that are fitted to the under side on the exhaust system.
You know that your engine in the car is mounted on Rubber chocks, called the Vibration dampers and yet it still has some "give to it". So, they use a FLEX HOSE, either Braided SS hose with Flexitalic Gaskets or Corrugated SS tubing with shielding and ordinary Hitemp flanges and steel do-nots. That is where it starts after the Ehaust Manifold. Move on down the line to the last piece of material on it, which is the tail pipe. Each one has its function and it only takes a few minutes to get the hang of it. All of these are slung as close to the inner floor, that is contoured to receive the pipes and muffler. Don't forget, currently, they want the whole system so tight, Please don't ask me how tight, because you will not stop laughing, they will test it for CO leak tests.. with an external probe, or a wand.
Study the system first and get to know the terminology. Most of us are ONLY the drivers of these cars. That is why we get flabbergasted when the Mechanic throws in a few TEN Dollar words, which make no sense for a start, but end up costing us an arm and a leg. Yes, just the muffler alone will not cost you any more than 60 bucks for the cheap makes. Only a few high end cars have them made of Stainless Steel (S.S.) and they do not need changing EVER. We don't buy such cars, we only buy CLUNKERS.
We have a long way to go, so live and learn, or start the same now, before your kids tell yoou what the parts are there for.
