Hey Dimple,

For the Lego model, do we need to buy a specific set of Legos or just a random (mix 'n' match) would suffice? I will also inquire with the Lego store when I visit them next, but thought to ask you first.

I am thinking about using my (whatever is left) creativity to try something different than the usual pre-designed ones. Does anything like this exist?

I am not sure I understood completely. When you say Lego Model, it is anything/something you want to build through imagination? If so, a mix and match of what you already have would be enough.

You can use the pieces from the pre-designed ones to make whatever you like.

However, if you need more pieces, you can buy a bucket of bricks at Target or the Lego store.

The difficulty comes in when you need specific components. Bricks can do only so much. Beyond that, you need Tecnic pieces which contain shafts, bushings, studs, beams, gears, pulleys, spools, and similar objects. These pieces allow you to create structures similar to constructing a building or a vehicle platform and so on.

One place I found where you can buy individual pieces of different types is http://www.brickowl.com" rel="nofollow">LINK

This outfit is located in Belgium and there are thousands of different components available for sale. You can buy any quantity. The drawback is the hefty shipping cost for airmail and the time for delivery (about 2 weeks). But they have been reliable so far.

On the other hand, if the Lego model you are referring to is for a competition, then you may need to buy a mandated base kit which comes with specific items that conform to the rules of the competition. For example, for the Lego league, the base kit came with a base plate, motor, battery pack, and so on.

Try the above link and pick Canada. A lot of details are available. There has to be an existing team, or a bunch of friends can form a team with one/two people signing up as the coach.
