Total Number of Indians abroad ( NRI/PIO ) almost 23 Million aka 2.3 Crores

1 Million Indians in Canada out of a population of only 35 million :)..aka 10 Lakhs

2.25 Million Indians in USA out of a population of 330 million !

I don't know if Malaysia & Sri Lanka should be included, as most Indian people over there are Tamils of ethnic Indian origin. Can't really say that they migrated over there, they are almost locals over there & almost native, living there for centuries.

Out of the 1 Million Canadian Desis , how many are Punjabis ?

I heard there are almost 25,000 IIT engineers in USA alone ! Most immigrated over there in the last 40-50 yrs.

Talk about brain drain !

How many other IIT , IIM & Medical graduates are in US & other countries !

Good analysis Adam,
From 1996 till 2000, almost all the engineers from all colleges , MCA from arts colleges ended up in America. After 2000, the influx of Software engineers was also there. That itself will make up much of the 'cream' of desi population in US A and all earn above $ 100K per year.
The unfortunate (not getting green card) ended up in Europe or Canada or Australia.
The brain drain did something good to India. We Archietcts are now getting paid more than IT engineers as there is a dirth of Archietcts and engineers of other disiplines here.

I think the population of Sri lankans was 100,000 in 2009 but I suppose that it is higly conservative, Once settled these sri lankans bring their sisters / brothers / parents etc into my country through foul means. Sri Lankans are also Indian tamils only.

Adam,
If I take the 40 people who did their computer science at the National Institute of Technology, Trichy in 1989-93, 38 people are in the US. 2 people are in India for family reasons.

Not only that, almosy 90% of the people who did Mech, Prod, metallurgy, ECE, EEE, Chemical are in the US. 20% of Civil guys are in USA.

Now think about IIT and other Govt. colleges. As I said before from 1996, almost all engineers from all collges have been going to USA after doing a 3 months software course. The trend stopped in 2000 with the dot com bust. After 2003, it started picking up again. Lucikly it all ended in 2007. Now to go abroad is a very big thing.

However you should not forget another thing. After 2007, most private colleges like Sathyabhama, Hindustran, MGR, Shanmuga were all converted into universities. I am seeing advts too much saying that in most of the colleges, there was almost 100 % placement (all into software).

Now when I see the classified, I am seeing only advts for teachers (schools) and professors (private colleges). people say that ladies prefer either bank (high salary) or a lecturer post. They work as lectures in the college near their hubby place of work.

Disturbing trend, I would say !!!

This is for ALL the 205 countries in an alphabetical order. This is from Indian Government.

http://moia.gov.in/writereaddata/pdf/NRISPIOS-Data%2815-06-12%29new.pdf

I find some numbers hard to believe, like just 20 people in some country ..LOL :)

I guess its just people who bothered to register & inform Indian gov. ..& Doesn't include others who never bothered to tell anyone.

So take the numbers with a pinch of salt.
