Hi,
my neighbour was doing this job; he imported ready made garments and tried to sell them in canada through different distribution stores. He claimed that the competition is very high in Toronto, as if a product is returned, (as normally most of the stores offer these money back guarantee in a month) its on you and you have to bear the loss, not the store. Almost all major stores have very strict quality inspections, and if you get thru them, then there is a quality inspection from the side of the customer :-) . My neighbour paid the transport and customs himself (during import) and he said that itself was a great headache. He tried on this business for almost two years and then he gave up, as he said that the margins in the end were too less and the competition was tough.
Now he is driving a cab in Downtown Toronto and is very Happy :)
This is just his experience, there might be some mistakes and shortcomings from his side too, as people usually hide their weaknessess.
Anyway I just wanted to share these facts with all of you, so there you go!

Thanks Faisal for the valuable iformation.Truly said, that it depends upon the individual experience. In fact I have spent several years working in the garment industry in production and in quality. What I can gather from my experience is that one does lose very badly in quality. But if one makes the best of it then u make a lot of profit too.
If u can pls. tell me about the job opportunities in the apparel industry in Canada,(like merchandiser/buyer /production manager etc.)I shall be greatful to u.

hi DesiGirl,
I have no experience of jobs in the industries that you have asked for. Perhaps someone else on this forum can help you regarding that.
I know of another friend of mine who was a buyer with almost 20 years of experience, landed in canada almost 2.5 years ago and couldnt find a job in his field till now.
I am not telling you this to discourage you, just sharing with you abt the real life situation of my desifriend.
Good Luck!
By the way do you know mr. K. Raj?

IMHO the garment industry in Canada is a very minor activity . Most of the readymade garments that are available here are sourced from other low labour cost countries, the most popular ones being India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, China and the Philipines. Consequently there are not many apparel manufacturing units here. Since the labour costs are high, those few that do exist, have a good amount of automation for mass production. I therefore do not see much opportunities of employment in those factories except perhaps in skilled labour positions.
