I have been wanting to get into a small business of my own, and coming from a non business family, I am more inclined to go into a franchise business to be able to get direction and support.

One of the franchises that I came across is Signarama. I found it interesting due to the following factors:

1. While it seems to be a retail business, the main clients are corporate.

2. Provides a good space for sitting in office while the production unit is within the shop itself.

3. Even though retail in some sense, it does not involve lifting, shelving, etc. etc.

4. Is big enough to employ 2-3 persons on regular salary basis which is above minimum wages, who can take care of the business if you are sick or have to attend to other personal matters.

5. Gives you the ability to create new things with your own ideas.

6. Is normally run on week days from 8 to 6 maximum - so offers you a business which is run like a office job.

The financial requirements are:

a. franchise fee of 50K
b. Other investment of 150k for large printers, office set up etc. of which 100K can be financed thru bank as it is an approved franchise by RBC I think
c. So total initial investment of about 100K plus a working capital of say 25K

Does anyone know about this business? They seem to have about 18 locations in Ontario and do all kinds of signs. Printing and small corporate gifts with names and logos is ancillary business.

Would anyone like to do this business in partnership, either as full partner (equity plus working) or only as working partner?

I invite a discussion on the topic - what could be the pros and cons of this business.

I have not read the complaints because for any business or any show, or any dealership or anything, you will find lots of complaints on internet. I have yet to come across a site which only shows the good things about the business, since people who have good experience with a business, do not go and write about it, but people who have had problems, do write a lot.

If any business franchise was real trouble, it would not be growing.

If complaints is the only thing you get on the internet, then why are you asking here on the INTERNET ?

You do realise that this particular forum of canadian desi is also on the INTERNET ?

So by your own logic don't you think the only advice you will get on Canadian Desi is also lot of complaints ?
Since no one with good experience writes about it . So why are you expecting and asking for something else i.e pros on CD ?

The franchise doesn't have to be good to grow, it just needs gullible franchisees to grow. Feel free to take their franchise, and very soon you will be one of the complainants crying on the internet.

CKB(AT), I think you are entering into unneccessary argument. Chandresh's question is directed towards CD members many of whom he knows personally. You cannot take online reviews, both good and bad, at their face value.

Slightly off topic but may be helpful.

Having business is everyone's dream and most of the time its not that simple as we all think. But important this is to take a first step by planning is a essential.

now back to your situation ( i'm just assuming)

- There are two ways anyone can start their business

First: - TRIAL - LEARN - FAIL AND use that knowledge to get into better situation ( be ready for financial loss, time loss and peace loss) , most of the people fail at first or second trial but experience gain threw out those years will make them better operator and can gain lot of confidence - So start with small investment which you can manage to loos

Second: Join or partnership with experience, Like-minded business people. Join- means stay with them , work or volunteer, spend few months trying to learn the Nitty-gritty of complex business system Or Partnership - invest with them as not silence partner but operating partner

About : all and every business has plus/minuses , at this moment i would stay away from any digital/printing franchise - simple reason not a huge market and competition is very tough ( lot and lot people prefer to go online for cheap printing ) - it would have been better if you have knowledge in that filed and you open up your own private brand in good location and expand - Franchise are damn costly to maintain and margins are very little

LAST WORDS - YOU STARTED THINKING OF HAVING YOUR BUSINESS , NO MATTER WHAT PEOPLE SAY , KEEP MOVING ON THAT DIRECTION - SOONER OR LATER YOU WILL GET SUCCESS . businesses are headache but it also gives us proud feeling and most importantly freedom of your own - and there is not price for our freedom :) :) :)

Thanks BP. However, I have been thinking of getting into business for 15 years but could not start it as never got a partner. So not much time left to try two or three times. Just want to get into something which might not be a money spinning one, but good enough to keep me busy and creative, and give me just enough to justify the risk.
