Hi , I am 45 year old having wife and 5 year old daughter in family. I am working in oil company in fort McMurray . Recently I got a job offer to work in Edmonton . I like to settled in city but compare my present salary new job salary is less . It will be 40k less savings per year. I am in dilemma whether to accept new job or no? One more dis advantage for this new job is I have to drive 80 km every day for whole life .
CDs please express your views whether I should accept new job and move to big city Edmonton or stay in town and save more money?
A lot depends on your current job security and satisfaction. The comfort of your wife and child. $$ is an important criteria to decide, but it's not the only criteria.
When you weigh your options based on above you will have your answer.
City or rural life both have their own advantages and drawbacks.

My advise would be for you to stay in Fort Mac itself.
Edmonton is not a very big town.
I can feel your concerns. You child is 5 years old and Fort Mac may not be the best place to bring up your child.
I am confident that you should refuse this offer but then try to look for other jobs in big cities. My guess is that in around 2 years you will get a very good job in Calgary, Edmonton or the US.
All the best.

Saving 40K less is a significant difference, don't you think?
Not sure about what you mean by 80 kms of travel, it translates 40 km each way. If there is a highway, is it that bad though?

I would not take it.

Fido.
Stay put wherever you are. You have everything to lose by earning 40k less than your current paycheck.
Are you just looking to get out of Fort Mac because of the Fire situation or the position in Edmonton is a better one with less pay? In either situations, I would've stayed in Fort Mac if I were you. In these difficult times of Economy (esp. Alberta), the goal is to earn and save more.
