Firstly, great site. Keep it up guys.
I am a short film maker and scriptwriter from Mumbai. Married with two small kids. Am planning to apply for immigration. My self-calculated pass mark is totalling to 79.
I need some advice pls.
1)Realistially, how long would it take for the visa to come through after subbmiting file? (2-3 years??)
2) Is a agency /lawyer really necessary? Is there any website which gives tips on how to apply, referal letters, common msitakes, etc. basically tips by desi's who have applied on their own.
3) For the past five years I have been a free lance scriptwriter . Never worked for any one concern. Been working for different production houses for different programes. Now, how do I get employment letters?
4)After getting visa, is it allowed /possible to go alone first for a year and then call over family? How long will their visa be valid?
5) If anybody can pls tel me, which of the two cities has more opportunites for Film, video, television jobs. Toronto or Vancouver?

From the day you complete medicals your medicals, from that day onwards you have exactly one year to enter. Say if you didn't receive your visa/landing papers by that time then you have do the medicals again.
Ex: Your medicals date : June 2004 and say your medicals are approved and they issued visa then your expiration date will be : June 2005

Vancouver is called as "Hollywood North". Toronto is also has some other nick name which rhymes with Hollywood.
Search "Hollywood North" in Google and you will get bunch of information.
I don't know the answers for your other queries.

- I AM A LAWYER. THERE ARE SEVERAL REASONS WHY PEOPLE HIRE LAWYERS TO REPRESENT THEM. LAWYERS WILL MAKE SURE THE APPLICATION IS COMPLETE AND FAULT PROOF. THEY CAN ALSO GO TO COURT FOR YOU SHOULD YOU GET REFUSED [GOD FORBID] OR IF THERE'S UNNECESSARY DELAY. HOWEVER, THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE WHO APPLY ON THEIR OWN AND ARE SUCCESSFUL. THE CHOICE IS YOURS!

- LETTERS FROM THOSE CLIENTS SHOULD SUFFICE

- YOU CAN PROCEED ALONE BUT THEY HAVE TO JOIN YOU BEFORE THE VISA EXPIRES. USUALLY 6-8 MONTHS. VISAS ARE VALID FOR A YEAR AFTER MEDICALS AND MEDICALS ARE DONE APPROX. 4 MONTHS BEFORE VISAS ARE ISSUED.

- LOTS OF PRODUCTION IN VANCOUVER BUT TORONTO WOULD BE A BETTER PLACE TO START.
