While browsing for information on rental accommodation I found that proof of employment for renting / leasing an apartment is Mandatory. How does a new immigrant get around this i.e. no job/no proof of employment ?

Everyone will agree that the very first thing a newcomer needs is roof over his/her head. And it is very unlikely that a person who has just landed has been able to obtain employment immediately.

Can someone please suggest what can be done to overcome such obstacles.

Well :) They generally like to rent their premises to ppl having fixed employment. i.e., Ppl of welfare are not welcome. However, by law you are not supposed to do that. You may get calls from the welfare board asking you for the reasons. You can do that if you are renting your rooms in the house you stay in. However, if these rooms have different "physical addresses" i.e., your 2nd floor etc., then you cannot turn away a person on welfare. ! (thats what my landlord says :D)

Thanks for the clarification Ottawa_Nerd. However, as any newcomer would tell you finding a roof over your head is the most important thing you would need to do after landing, especially when you have family accompanying.

The thing is no job-no apartment and no apartment-difficult to find job moving around without a fixed address. A catch 22 situation.

How does one find rental accommodation when you have no job and you have recently landed? Request CDs/senior CDs to make suggestions.

Hi 1Gujju,

there are many landlords, who will rent you the apt, if you show willingness to pay 6 months rent in adv. I came thru one immigration agency, lived for the first 2 months in their guest house. Fortunately, found tele mktg job in the first moth. I was able to locate a bsmt apt without any help, just by going thru local newspaper. The landlord was Indian lady (not living in the same house). And guess what, she agreed to rent me her apt, even without seeing me. We just spoke with each other on the phone. I went to see the apt (other Indian couple was abt to vacate the aptin few days). Liked it, and cfmd on the phone with land lady. WhatI want to say is that, even if I was not having a job, I would have agreed to pay rent for 1st 6 months, and she would have agreed to give me anyways.

Don't worry, you'll find one as well.

As I mentioned in earlier posts, any help, feel free to contact me.

All the best

:)

Gujju, if you have any friends / relatives in Canada that would help. They may wish to guarantee for you i.e., should you default in payments, they would be held responsible. So that approach is a tad difficult unless they are really very close to you or are blood relatives. We Indian's have a habit of bringing out "door ke rishtedaar's" whenever we are in India and visit a new place. Unfortunately such a scenario may/may not exist in Canada. The cost of living is just too high here.
Have you tried visiting those workshops for new immigrants ? Maybe they can give you some information ? What abt browsing through the classifieds posted on this forum ?

Reachash, Ottawa Nerd : Many thanks for your encouraging responses. I have not yet landed. But while browsing for rental accommodation I found it was difficult to get one without employment. And I got very concerned as to what I will have to go through once I arrive in Canada. Thanks again.

Gujju Bindaas bidu... ekdum jhakkas
We have folks like Reachash that make a difference in our lives !
You will have to land here first to search for accomodation. If u have nowere else to go, try and stay for a few days @
Hosteling International buildings.
The price is cheap and they are mostly located in downtown regions.
From there you can search for apartments, as Reachus has suggested. If , by that time, you get to know someone... Aur bhi Masti :D
Happy Home Hunting !
