Today while I was searching around for an apartment, I was been told by one of the building Superintendent that as per the policy of the building management, they do not lease to unemployed. As a new immigrant (just a week in Toronto Canada) a job in hand is little difficult, however I said I can provide my bank statement and if required a letter from my bank assuring my financial condition as I am a returning resident and my banking is continued for last 1 year and above.
My question is, can they deny on these grounds,I don't know the legality on this, I was not having anyone with me while discussing this, so no witness for me either.
If this denial is legal how to address this kind of situation in leasing a rental place.
If any of you know any apartments where new immigrants are approved for lease w/o employment but with showing bank statements as proof of financial stability please let me know. I am ready to lease rental unit ASAP or latest by September 1st as my temporary accommodation is only up to 31st August. Looking for apartment in mid downtown area where TTC commutation is easily accessible.
We are young couple,no kids, no pets, no smoke, clean and peaceful.

A friend of mine had faced a similar issue and their bank deposit of $30K was taken as an alternative option by the property management . They lived at Davisville - Lascelle Blvd ...

I faced a similar situation, where the building management took 6 months rent as deposit. The building is nice, clean ,well maintained and a 10 minutes bus ride from don mills station (bus stop just outside the building). The residents are good and I haven't faced a problem in the past 2 years .
PM me in case you want the name of the building rental office.

Hi,
We moved into an apartment just a month back. Our bldg required us to provide a bank statement with sufficient money to pay the 12 months rent, which was not a problem. We live just opp the don mills subway station and we do not even have to cross the road to get into the subway station.
PM me if you want more details.
