I read this while ago:
Air India to add another flight on Delhi-NY route

These are not non-stop. IN fact if you re-check the link in my original post, it says clearly it is the first non-stop link between North America and India.

I went to the site and tried to get fares for first week of JAN, 2004. A whopping $5000. They do come down towards the end of January to $1689, so I'm guessing most of the limited fare seats for the next few months have already been gobbled up. I called up a rep for Air Canada and she confirmed that.
Hope this encourages other airlines to start the same direct flight on one of the most profitable route ever.
