I read in some of the earlier posts that you need to photograph the jewelry you intend to bring later on....is it mandatory and valid still?

Also, is a detailed list of every item and value required or ballpark description and value is fine.

Yes this is what specified in the instructions given to all new immigrants. Last year when I went to Canada (Calgary), they never asked me to show the photographs of jewelry, instead they accepted my list as printed.
