You are OK if it is more than one year.
It HAS to be more than one year.
There is no upper limit.

Hi,

I'm a newbie here.

I'm about to migrate to Canada from US next month and I'm importing my US car as well.

Someone told me that even though an automobile is included in one's personal effects, certain fees/taxes still needs to be paid (like around $2kCDN for a 2000 model). Is this true?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Visit http://www.riv.ca." rel="nofollow">LINK
You do not have to pay anything except the charges to RIV and there are some expenses involved in getting the car redone, as per Canadian standards. We imported our car into Canada, 4 months back.
No problems....

Thanks for the input. I just called RIV and was advised to contact Canadian Customs for more information about duties and taxes. Did you call them before you imported your car?

You need to have the original title, no recall letter, etc. You have to fax the details 72 hours before the day of import(you can do atleast 4 to 5 days before) to US Customs at the border where you are going to import. Call the day before you move and confirm, that the papers have reached them.If you tell them the approximate time of your crossing the border, they will keep your permission letter ready. (Check out their working hours.)Just collect it and go to the Canadian Customs. They do not have to be informed beforehand. Pay the required fees. Keep a credit card/cash ready. Make sure they write your name and Canadian address correctly. (We did not notice and is taking steps to correct the name) .They will check the car thoroghly and give you back the papers needed to register it in Canada. You will have 45 days time to do the modifications and register it.
If you have any more doubts, please let me know.
