Coming from the Accounts field with Oracle Financial experience, the first thing I did was to attend a seminar by India rainbow, an Immigrants assistance & Guidance centre. Changed my resume (CV??) as guided and lo! I got calls from Accountemps, Accounting Advantage, Staffing strategies, Ajilon, Keith Bagg etc. Have been here since Aug and already worked for 1 1/2 months doing reconciliation jobs. Am reporting on tuesday to a CA firm to assist in their clients' year end jobs. I do know I can handle a finance dept but then my shortfalls are lack of hands on experience in MYOB, Quick Books, Simply accounting and accpac. I also know that a 1/2 hr briefing will do the needful, but then who is willing to give their time to us? I am also registering with CGA for persuing higher studies. I do see the light at the end of the tunnel. Why did I come here for? Kids future and my academics. So far I am satisfied that I took the right decision.
Simple, dont loose heart.

Balaji,
Thanks for sharing your experiences. Your profile says you're still in UAE, I'm guessing you haven't updated it yet.
Some more questions that I'm sure others will have too..
1) What age group are you in?
2) What was your educational qualification in India?
When you have a chance, could you please elaborate?
And If anybody has more questions, please PM them to me or any of the other moderators and we'll post them.

Are you there?

Balaji,
Some more questions that I got as a PM from someone.
1. What preparation did you do before landing?
2. How much Cd was able to help you- or discourage you?
3. Do you he think without Oracle, you would have been able to get similar response from employers?
4. Did you have any fear of any kind, specially related to family responsibilities etc at the time of moving, or were you sure you will be able to get some job in his field soon after landing>
5. Were you prepared to go in for odd jobs straight away - or even after some time if need was there? Basically, were you mentally agreeable to doing odd jobs on coming to Canada - because you were living as an Expat before moving here?
Please reply when you get a chance.

I was preparing for abt an year but then the end was always in a hurry as I had only a month and a half after receiving the passports and had to complete a trip to India too.
CD was of immense help as I met people in similar situations and Mr.Massoods answers were a real Morale boosters.
I really dont know if Oracle helped me as I havent seen any ads asking for people with implementation back grounds. But my background in pure accounting which started with manual accounting did help.
I knew that I always had the last resort of going back to the gulf to my ex-employer as I left with an open invitation. At the same time, I was really prepared for the struggle I needed to face. The training at India Rainbow did help a lot.Plus having a first cousin and a couple of close friends did help.
I havent done any odd job as I felt getting a call from Accountemps and registering there meant that I could stick to my field. Plus being gifted with a high speed data entry (14k numeric hits per hr with 100% accuracy) would get me an entry level position.
To clear ur doubts, no one does an odd job before getting into a job in the gulf cause there are strict visa transfer rules, illegality of people working with a visit visa.
Last but not the least, hoving confidence in oneself, being prepared for a struggle for a 6mth-1 year period, understanding the job requirement in a Canadian set up and proper planning ones course of action does help.
Adding that the purpose is to give a good future to the kids makes the struggle and sacrifices something small looking at the success they get from the school. My son wins regular prizes, appreciation etc from his schools for his math and general knowledge.
Above all, LUCK plays a factor too.

Good luck to everyone
