Hi fellow CDs,
I have landed with 3 kids 2 month ago, presently staying in mississauga. My field is Accounting/Finance and I possess professioanl qualification from Chartered Institute of Management Accountants- (CIMA) UK . I also have relevant expereicen of over 10 years in the energy sector. However, despite trying very hard, I am unable to get even an entry level Job. Before Coming here, I thought taht I would be able to get a job since there are a lot of accounting jobs and I have an international qualification. But picture is totally different here, recruitment agencies outrightly deny consideration or putting forward the resume to their clients for permanant opportunity and register you for contract work, but I have not had luck even contract work, though I am reistered with Roberthalf, Kelly services, Spherion, Lannicks contract, Micheal Page etc.
Is there a way to get job in this country. Please do reply.

Hi NYK,
If it's any consolation (I know it is precious little), you are not alone in this situation. Most placement companies wouldn't touch you with barge pole unless you have "Canadian" experience or you get plain old lucky.
I suggest you visit http://www.careerbridge.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK
this program is only for new immigrants (aka arrived in last 3 years) and provides an opportunity to applyfor paid internships ($2000/month) with reputed organizations and banks; even though money is not lots, it does 2 important things - it gets you the "Canadian" experience and gets you a foot in the door.
It is absolutely true that 80% of jobs never get advertised in Canada but are filled through reference. NETWORK is the mantra. Seneca College offers a free month long orientation for newcomes - at the end of the program they help you find a voulunteer position with a firm (proverbial foot-in-the-door). Other than that COSTI and ACCESS organizations help out too. Do check out the following link:

Lot of accounting people shoot for CGA/CMA designation by taking courses with Continuing Education of various community colleges (ie. they work survival jobs like telemarketing, retailing etc etc while attending classes in the evening/weekend.)
It might also help to take some communication courses and work on how your personality comes across in face-to-face interactions.
Finally do hang in there......... it is will get better.....perseverance pays;that and the courage to ask for "informational" interviews an. Call the firms that you are interested in and ask for "informational" interviews with the HR - don't pester them for job but let them know you are available and what you can do for the firm........Again in keep in touch without making a nuisance of yourself........
Good luck.
Join the professional CMA association of Ontario. They have mentors that can assist you with your job search as well as offer a career site with members only access to job opportunities.
Do not rely soley on recruiters. As Rashmig suggested, the hiddenjob market which can be accessed by networking with others, as well as cold calling holds a high number of available positions.
Also review your resume, cover letter and interview skills. You can obtain assistance with your job searchthroughmany free job search programs and services through HRSDC. Contact your local HRSDC/Service canada location for more information
Good luck.

there are so many ppl talking about "canadian Experience "all the time. i feel if ppl would anly be willing to move to smaller places where the need for immigrants is far greater . you will al find and get a better and freindlier reception.
we did the same and I have had no problem finding a job. nobody has ever asked for canadian experience. leve tronto, vancouver calgary etc and come to the smaller provinces like PEI, Nova Scotia, New foundland
Nova Scotia is a nice place no doubt but I believe Accounting/etc. jobs will be pretty hard to find. The job market in Nova Scotia is just not good. I believe I am qualified to comment on this having lived there for 2+ years.
There are some IT jobs, however jobs in other fields are hard to come by.
Besides the cost of living in the province is pretty high(contrary to popular belief)(I am referring to gas prices, taxes(income), groceries, flights in and out of Halifax etc.). All in all, it is a nice place to stay if 2 people(couple) can get jobs.
Perhaps Janmeja may have better ideas regarding business opportunities, but I don't believe the chances of employment, especially in the non-IT sector are very bright. However, it is true that for the most part, most people are not impolite.
Hi NYK
To add to the steps suggested by rashmig...u can try the Employment Class with 11 week Co-op Work Placement in accounting positions given by St Gabriel. They also teach free Simply Accounting course. Generally most of the people taking co-op do get a job in their own field. Their address is given below for ur ref:
Malton - St. Gabriel
3750 Brandon Gate Drive,
Mississauga, ON L4T 3M8 fax 905-362-0706
Good Luck!
