Based on what the electronics store guy told me, the DVD player will play the disc fine - you just won't be able to see it on the TV screen.
The problem is not with the DVD player, but the TV.
What I seem to need is not just a multi-region DVD player, but a multi-region TV too
The reason he said the TV can't play the Europe region DVD is because of the difference in number of lines in the video (whatever that means).
European standard is higher than the North American standard (250 lines in N. America vs 1500 lines in Europe).
Therefore, a North American TV gets a signal of that quality from the DVD player but can't deal with it.
If I play a US region DVD on that multi-region player it will work, but a Europe region disc won't get displayed on the TV screen.
This is what he *said*.
What I am trying to find out now (from you guys) is whether this is true or not.
I don't know enough about audio/video conversion, etc. to make a decision on my own.
And I also don't want to sink the $$ into buying a multi-region system unless it can play multi-region discs.
Else, I will just buy a regular TV/DVD, etc. and continue using my PC for playing the other region DVDs.

Hmmm, I got interested in this subject and did some research. Heres what I found:
First, heres a list of regions and countries which belong:
Region Countries
0 No Region Coding
1 United States of America, Canada
2 Europe, including UK, France, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Arabia, Japan and South Africa
3 Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Borneo and Indonesia
4 Australia and New Zealand, Mexico, the Caribbean, and South America
5 India, Africa, Russia and former USSR countries
6 Peoples Republic of China
7 Unused
8 Airlines/Cruise Ships
9 Expansion (often used as region free)
Second, and this might help you: There ARE some players which will play a Region 2 DVD on any TV without additional equipment - in other words, they have in-built video converter. Heres the link to their website and this is what their site says:
http://www.dvdoverseas.com/store/index.html?catalog86_0.html
\\\"These players do not require a special Multisystem TV or a Video Signal Converter and can play any region PAL or NTSC format DVD discs from Europe, Asia or anywhere else directly on a standard American TV.\\\"
They have a Philips DVD player at $119 and I am not positive but I feel pretty sure that was the one I had originally and it asked me to setup output mode (NTSC/ PAL) for TV.
Hope it helps, keep us posted pls.
I have a JVC TV and a Philips DVD player on which I have played some DVDs brought at Square One Wallmart .
I didnt use any converting devices and the picture is swell . Now how do I understand this :???

I feel that the region incompatibility issue may be a thing of the past and carefully chosen a ready product must be available w/o much price differential ......... Here they cost just CAD 100/-

This is what I did. I went to a 220 V shop and bought a Citizen Multii Region DVD Player which can play on both PAL and NTSC TV. The one I bought has dual voltage feature i.e., it can work on both 110V and 220V. Currently, I am using it in Canada plugged to a TV which is only NTSC. If I remember it right, I paid $150 about 6 months back.Daks
