Hi Guys,

First of all I would like to let you know that I am totally new to CD. Before posting this question I have browsed through most of the sections but could not find the exact answer for my following questions. If the issue is already been discussed and if I somehow missed it please point me to that thread.

Recently I got an offer from Toronto IT firm. My pay would be aorund 60KCAD. I have about two years experience in reputed company and Masters in Elelctrical engineering from reputed US university. Due to both personal and professional reasons I am considering moving to Canada. If there is anyone in my filed (Digital design/verification) would you please let me know if it is a fair offer for my education and experience (I would like to let you know that I have already checked monster.ca, hotjobs.ca and salary.com). Also would you please let me know what would be the amount of my each paycheck (every 15 days) after taxes assuming that I wont invest in 401K or anything. Is the income tax structure in Canada same as that in the US please let me know. btw I am working as Digital Design Engineer in California now. I am in the process of gathering information before accepting this offer. I have asked for about one week time to think about this offer.

I have lots of other questions, however I am going through the previous discussions to get the answers for those.

Thank you for your time and help in advance

The salary is high as per canadian stds. you will pay more taxes here and end up with nothing.

Dont ever think of coming from US here. you will regret it later.

There is nothing in this country thats interesting and work culture is very unprofessional.

I was in US for 5 yrs in IT field. Finally its your personal decision.

Nobody wants to stay here but no choice for some people.

Its the most foolish decision in your life to move to this country as everything sucks here.

This for your own good and and as a professional with Masters Education and Experience this is my advice to you or for anyone else coming to this country

celibate_friend --

I propose to vehmently disagree with Sridharm.
It is too judgemental to make statements like this.

First of all, you have to understand that despite the geographical proximity, the USA and Canada are different countries.
They have different financial systems, different work culture and different social laws.
It is not fair to compare them like this and pass a sweeping judgement.

I have also lived in the US for almost five years before moving to Canada and like you went through the same uncertanities and confusions and "jabd-o-jehad".
I can totally empathise with how you are feeling.

The first part is true - it is definetely an above average salary (although not by California standards :o )
Yes, you will pay more in taxes when compared to someone who makes less money (isn't that true everywhere)?
However, it is not true that you will be left with nothing.
You can have a pretty decent lifestyle with that kind of annual income.
Don't compare it with California, where 60K is peanuts.

This is a matter of personal opinion and I won't dispute it.
I have lots of friends who moved from the US to Canada - some regret it, and some don't.
It all depends on a person's individual situation.

Not true.
The work culture is different, but not unprofessional.
In general, Canadians are more cautious, circumspect, and slower to make significant decisions.
You will notice this right from the recruiting process.
It is not fair to dismiss this difference as unprofessionalism.

For instance, if you go from the US to Japan and compare their work culture, you will find it totally out of whack.
That doesn't mean they are unprofessional.

That said, the only thing that would indeed suck for you is the weather - especially coming from California.
You will sorely miss the sunshine, the wide open skies, the ocean breeze, the beaches, etc.
However, some people happen to like colder weather better.
And Toronto is much better off than some places in the US - Toronto is a tropical island compared to places like Minneapolis, Wisconsin, Idaho, etc.

If you are seriously considering the offer, there are a few other things you should inquire about -

1. Do they provide extended health coverage (like prescription drugs, vision, dental, hospital stay, etc.)

2. Do they have any RRSP (similar to 401K) plans. Do they have any company provided disability and life insurance, etc.

3. What will your role be - what are the growth prospects.

4. Travel involved - this is important especially in the winter season.
You don't want to travel when it is -35C with the windchill and all the flights are cancelled and you are stuck in an airport for 48 hrs.

Feel free to ask more questions.

Hi there.

I came here from the U.S. too. When I was going for my first job interview, I met a desi guy in the subway who told me "You made the stupidest mistake of your life by coming here from the U.S.". That was 4 years ago.

I haven't regretted my decision even a bit to date. Rather it has worked out quite well for me. I find the people quite nice here and the work culture is quite professional, at least at all the places I've worked. Its a bit more conservative compared to the states, but not that different after all. And I have many many friends who want to stay here, some of them are citizens and could go to the states quite easily, but don't plan on anything like that.

The point is there are differing perspectives on this matter.

Job market is definately tougher than the states, and 60k isn't that bad, although you may be able to get better. My honest suggestion would be to take that for now at least, come here, study the market and then decide if you can get more.

Are you there?

Moving to canada has worked pretty well for me and my wife . We are both IT professionals based in Vancouver . We are doing pretty well and as per what we had expected when we moved here from US. Initially it takes some time to get settled but in the end things worked fine for us. But than I cannot speak for everybody .

Hi All,

First of all I am extremely sorry for delayed response from my side as I left for vacation the very next day I posted my query. I would like to thank you all for your time and help at this crucial juncture. I would also like to let you know that this is the most helpful and informative forum I have come across so far. In the most of the discussions I have gone through so far when you guys compare Canada with US or any other part in the world everyone always mentions that people in Canada are nice and its quite evident from the responses and help I have got so far.

I know that deciding about this offer is the most difficult task; I regret to let you know that I have not decided yet. No matter whether I decide to take up the job or not I would like to be part of this forum. I would like to thank you again for your valuable time and help and I will keep you updated. I should not have discussed personal details such as salary but I wanted to have an exact idea, so I had to put that figure in my query. Hope I have breached the protocol of the forum.
