Indian close to Jordan F1 drive

India's Narain Karthikeyan is on the verge of securing a Formula One drive with Jordan in 2005.

Jordan sporting director Trevor Carlin told BBC Sport that the team were in talks with Karthikeyan and that a deal was \"not finalised, but is very close\".

The team have offered the 28-year-old the drive, but he must firm up a sponsorship package before the deal could be completed, Carlin said.

Karthikeyan would be the first Indian F1 driver if he secures the seat.

The driver told a news conference in Mumbai (Bombay) on Tuesday: \"In principle I have agreed to drive for the Jordan F1 team for the 2005 season. We will be signing the agreement in the next couple of days.\"

Incidentally, the Jordan team was acquired by a Toronto based businessman of Russian origin in January..........

good to learn that someone on this forum shares the same passion - F1.

But geeting a drive for Jordan or Minardi is different from geting a drive for Williams or Mclaren or Ferrari. Narain (read his sponsors) will have to shell out millions of dollars to secure a drive. This would not have been the case if he is a good enough driver to be noticed by the top teams. Look at Kimi - straight from carting to Mclaren - WOW. but as a fellow Indian I am proud that Narain would be soon starting at the same grid as David Coulthard, Montoya, Kimi or The Schumachers.

We should wish him all the luck, courage and wishes that his career takes off from Jordan as did Michael Schumachers when he was picked by Jordan over 14 years ago.

Needless to say its competetive as hell out there.

As per F1 site, they dont even list any drivers for Jordan.

Isnt Jacques villeneuve canadian?

Funny to note that in the constructors championship toyota (which is a powerhouse in Rally) manages only a spot in the last 3.

What happened to Damon hill?

Those are my disconnected remarks/questions for the day.:D

Yes, it is. But remember M Schumacher earns over $75 Million.

Narain's development is new and has not yet signed for Jordan.

Isnt Jacques villeneuve canadian?

He is. Son of Jill Villeneuve. He is a French Canadian from Montreal.

Toyota is a new team. But this year thay have Ralf and Trulli, so the team should be much more competitive than last year.

What happened to Damon hill?

Won the world championship in 1996, next year went to Jordan, gave them their first ever win at Spa, went to TWR - Arrows and almost gave them their first win at Hungary but the car had a problem on the last lap. Came second to Villeneuve. since then retired from F1. was my favorite when he was with Williams.

Those are my disconnected remarks/questions for the day.:D

Actually Giles Villeneuve (Jill is a woman's name) was Jacques' father, and a top line F1 driver in the 70's and the 80's as well.

I missed watching a good part of the season last year, but still wondering what might have prompted Ralf to make the move!

Actually I thought it was the other way around - he first went to Arrows in 97? I could be mistaken though!.......was always a Schumi fan, including in his first years at Ferrari :)
