Dear Friends,
As in last years, this year again I got my Income Tax filed through a professional, associated with a well known group. But this year, out of curiosity, I checked whole thing again after he did; and believe me, found more than many mistakes. With all MY calculations I went back to him and refund for me and my wife went up to $5790 from $4810 originally prepared by him with the same data. He prepared some 'T1 - adjustments' and gave me to sign and mailing to tax department.
My point is what if I had not checked? What are his moral and professional responsibilities? Is he responsible for any thing, at least the hefty fee I paid?
I also plan to check all our previous years returns now.

Was that professional acting on his/her own or representing the group. If he/she was representing the group you could always complain to their main office.

If you don't mind can you give the name of the organization, just so that CD's are cautious.

Depending on what errors were there, chances are that CRA will correct them and then send you a reassessment. For eg. if it was an error in the T4 numbers, CRA does get a copy, when they check, they'll fix the numbers for you.

Dear CDs
Yes, He was representing a famed group. I think it may not be proper to name the group, as I have dealt only with him. The mistakes were such which CRA may not correct on his own. Also my Tax Refund and 2004 Assessment are already with me, so to get the needed corrections, I will have to request again through T1 adjustment forms for me and my family. The mistakes were-
He forgot to enter tution amount transfered to me on provincial tax credits(He took that on Federal)
He used 2003 figures while callculating maximum amount which could be transfered to me as tution expenses from my son.
For OHOSP he forgot to put amount deposited in my form inspite of document and summary provided by me having all those informations.
Some other small and silly mistakes.

CD's,
This year I was filling up the tax forms through ufile for my income tax from my office. I was under a work dead line (working 16 hours a day in the office for the past 5 weeks) and so did not concentrate fully when filing income tax.
I had got $1000 as bonus last year from my employer by means of company cheque (but which was not included in my T4 slip) and i forgot to mention it in my tax return. I have already sent my form to the CRA.
What can I do now. Is there any possible way of informing the CRA the mistake on my part or should i just let it go , considering that it is a measly sum of 1K.
Answers are appriciated esp. from SS.

IMO, in case, and only in case the preparer has put his name as the preparer of tax return in the form and signed it, you can go back to the company and claim damages of some kind. Also, there should be a proof that his services have been paid for. If it is only a preparer who made the mistakes, and no proof that he/the company he represents was paid for the services, there doesn't seem a strong enough case.

You can complete a T1 adjustment and send it to CRA. By doing this you would save penalty and interest.
