I was unemployed for most part of last year (aren't we all are???) and have very low income for 2002. However, I had a large bill of medical expenses for my wife and daughter (more than $3000 - since I was not covered by any medical plan). Initially I purchased medicines from Canada, but when the bills started rising, I got them from India thru friends/relations of mine. These were all prescription medicines. I have two questions:
1. Can I claim the Indian bills as my medical expenses bills for my credit? Or only Canadian bills can be claimed?
2. Is there any way I can get some of it (or all - but no govt or insurance company gives back everything) being refunded by the government (something like GST refund, CCTB refund - those two are also primary liability of the taxpayer but the govt still gives a refund, isn't it?)

Chandresh,
I dono the answers for your queries.
But I have a question for you.
When we claim the medical expenses, do we need to produce the receipts? If yes, do we need to send copy of those along with the tax returns?
This is my first year filing here.
My tax advisor has told me to attach it and so I have attached them to my return. I have kept photocopies with me.

yes, you can claim out of province and out of country medical expenses based on the revenue canada guidelines on maximum claim allowed for such...
keep the receipts handy, as there have been occasion when people making larger than usual medical claims have been audited...

How about a refund (like GST) or assistance (like CCTB) in case the expenses are high and income really low or nil.
