GUJARAT State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA), set up after the 2001 earthquake, has won the UN Sasakawa Award 2003 for exemplary work done in disaster management and risk reduction. The award will be presented on October 16 at Bonn, Germany.
GSDMA was nominated by the Government of India for the prestigious award which is given for promoting global efforts to reduce risk and vulnerability. Two other institutions from Venezuela and France will also get the award. The award and certificate of merit is given by the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction, a wing of United Nations working in the field of disaster management, mitigation and risk reduction, said an official statement on Sunday.
The UN Sasakawa Award is given to individuals and institutions nominated from the world over. The UN and Government of India sent letters congratulating Chief Minister Narendra Modi the head of GSDMA. Chief executive officer of GSDMA Dr P K Mishra and Joint CEO Thiruppugazh will go to Bonn to receive the award.
